Nothing wrong with that at all. Different strokes for different folks. I used to mark with a dab of grease but just don't anymore.

gg
I keep a red marker with my sharpening set up so I just count strokes till I see red like diesel said

We have a couple of small saws that have 20’s on them and I can swap out a chain quicker then my guy can file that 20. If you guys were doing it for production you wouldn’t be filing in the brush it’s more of a break more then anything.

Can I ask why everywhere east of the Rockies runs such short bar? Doesn’t it bug your guys backs having to bend down all the time well limbing?
I run a MS210 & 16" bar for limbing, can cut all day and never feel like I'm carrying anything. I guess we run smaller bars since we have smaller trees, I couldn't justify a bar over 24" because I don't have but a few trees over 36" in diameter. I also don't like the extra bar weight out front, hurts my elbows & back. If I'm doing a mix of felling and limbing, I run the 20" saw, its a good combo for what I need.

Finally ran into the guy who owns the property and the mill I'm using.
As background, I administer a large shooting range for him as part of a volunteer executive committee.
I told him I have taken a shine to the mill and asked if I could buy it off him.
His reply "sure, it's yours. I'll never use it."
I asked how much he might want for it (considering I already put a new engine, clutch, and blades on it
out of my pocket [as rent] I was only prepared to go a couple hundred bucks).
He said "take it. I don't want anything for it".
Now the proud owner of a reasonably priced antique sawmill that needs lots of modernization LOL.

I then told him I was going to pay him $50 a month for the fuel I'm burning in his telehandler he let's
me use.
He refused that too and said just bring in more members (to the shooting range).

Very generous seeing he gave me a 50 HP tractor with FEL and snow blower this summer, then added a finish mower
to the list (which needs lots of work).

The tractor he gave me. FEL and blower in the background.

Didn't you say in a post recently that you don't have good luck most of the time, I guess "good" is relative!! I'm not lucky enough to have someone gift me a sawmill.

My weird wind storm damage continues, was clearing down by the road and came across this big hickory tree that fell. I hope to mill it, seems a better use for it than cutting up for firewood. I will go down with the big saw and cut it & take measurements, but looks to be 20-24" at butt and about 18-20' long and straight.

You're right. Glass half full and all that.
A certain amount of bad luck, then something good. That's what keeps me level :)
(I think I also said I am mostly able to shrug off the bad stuff and go at it again the next day).

I cut some firewood today. Since I didn’t have any help I didn’t get the splitter out. The mini x is great for cutting firewood.
