They have to be pretty good sized though, and are only allowed a certain amount of taper.

That would depend on the pole if you’re cutting just 40’s they will be small enough a harvester can handle them. 125’s or 175’s is a whole another ball game and a joy to get down without snapping.

Years ago I put new plywood on a snow mobile trailer and painted it with old engine oil. Straight, no diesel. It dried fine to the touch and didn't rub off onto clothes and stuff. But if it got wet and I tipped the trailer down I couldn't walk on it. Good thing I had caulks on the sled or it might have been to slippery to load.

gg
I borrowed a trailer once that was oiled and I had to load a 2WD FEL tractor on it in the rain. It took about 20 runs at it and I was glad I did not slide off the truck end over the stop when it finally tilted back flat. Wood was in good shape though.

I painted my sno-mobile trailer with used oil, slopped it on pretty good and left it in the sun and it did dry out some... About a couple years later it was back to rotting.

SO, I bought a gallon of blk. oil base paint and dumped the whole gallon on the deck and broomed it all over. That actually lasted longer but it only lasted a few years anyway...

That trailer now has 5/8" PT on it now, and it still looks like new.

Even here there's mixed opinions LOL.

One interesting vid I watched more or less claimed the diesel mixed in was key.
The cost of manufactured products around here is wild in my opinion. I have an unlimited supply of
used engine oil (a friend has his own repair shop) and diesel is expensive, but if that's all the cost then.....
I suppose I'll have to maybe give it a try and if the beams rot out in a couple years then I'll have my answer.

I even saw something about a guy who worked for Dupont who did his own testing at home over decades and found that
engine antifreeze (ethylene glycol - not the other stuff) made an excellent preservative. Resisted moisture and the bugs
hated the stuff.

I had asked a while back what guys were using for blade lube systems.
Rigged something up today. Cost more than I thought, but ......I haven't tried it yet.
There is a dug well on the property I'm at. Crappy water. I don't even know what they
were trying to accomplish digging that tiny, shallow well, but whatever. Not my property.
Threw a bucket down on a rope, tile was too narrow for the bucket to upend itself and fill.
I grabbed a board to push it under water so it would fill - stupid well is about 3 inches deep !!
What was the idea there I wonder???
I'll have to bring water each day I guess. (my poor old car).

Still having chainsaw issues. The guy who helped me fell a couple trees one day asked if he could use my old Homelite chainsaw to cut up a tree that fell
during a storm the other day.
I went to use it today to drop trees and could barely make sawdust with it. I was ..... upset. BRAND NEW chain on it I only used for one tree !
He must have tried to dig a hole through the gravel to bury the broken tree.
So I dug out that brand new, still in the box, chainsaw that I had replaced last week. Started on fourth pull. Threw it in the Gator and headed to where I
was going to cut a few trees, wouldn't start!! Holy crap, I hate machinery.
That's when I used my own saw and found out how dull it was.
Took a break before I did something stupid. Got the brand new saw running, and used it with no problems the rest of the day.

Anyway, for anyone still reading, cut down 3 tall trees, went around to the bottom of the little cliff I dropped them over, dragged them from the bush to where I could work, and bucked them.
Got 45 feet of usable logs out of each tree, but 2 were much smaller diameter than I thought and I barely got 6x6" out of those 2. Some live edges. No big deal, I can still
use them.

Something strange I'm finding is no matter how carefully I measure for 6x6" I often get 6x6 1/4. Not worth another cut for 1/4", I can just use the 6" for height, width doesn't matter for my
project so I'll turn the over-size side horizontal.
I'm going to try using the built in measuring thingy and maybe measure 3" up from the center on each final cut and see if that works any better.

I'm halfway through my required beams. 28 out of 56 needed. (I'll probably go 60 anyway).
I'm out of work now so hopefully I can finish off what I need by the end of the week. I can give 'er full time now.

Then tear down my old wall and replace. The guy I was counting on to bring the lumber to my place won't be available but I think there's a couple others
I can pull a favor from. I hope !

Wish me luck LOL. Seems like I don't have much sometimes.

Around here they sell red pine for power poles and it brings big prices
There's a planted stand right in the middle of the city here where they've been waiting years to get big enough to use for poles. About 10 acres.
Heard recently they're cutting them all down anyway to put in a housing development. What a waste.

A helper and I cut, split and loaded a load today. The mini x is the handiest thing I’ve had for doing firewood. I hooked my dump trailer on and I’m going to load it too because diesel is expensive. .

About how much do you think you will have on?
That looks like a good setup for your uses. 👍

I was hoping I had 6 rick on the truck but I’m guessing more like 5. I can get more on the trailer because the sides are taller although the trailer is only rated for 11,800 pounds so I can’t put much over 5 on it.
