Left turn on 2 lane. Stay in R/H lane or L/H to let cars continue on?

So if you're doing this move into the left lane to avoid getting rear ended or making the person behind you slow down thing, what do you do when you want to turn right?
Slow and turn right. If the car behind me is in a hurry, they move to the left.. so, same thing?

We even have 'wide spots' to the right at many intersections so that people can pass people turning left, on the right.

Just drive in your proper lane.
Now why couldn't we all have just said this instead of blathering on for paragraph after paragraph. I am a bit upset with myself. This is how Egon has 21000 posts....right to the point and move on to the next one!

This discussion has me questioning whether we need bigger brake lights or brighter turn signals.

Or maybe bigger windshields so drivers can see what's happening in front of them.
There are a lot of vehicles that could use better/bigger/brighter turn signals for sure!
A lot of the European vehicles that use the amber turn signal separate from the brake light I have noticed aren't very visible and they are very small. Seems like with more and more LED's in use, they should be super bright.

Yeah and turn across a lane that is not your right of way. Real good there. It was okay until you had a wreck...

B for me. All drivers slow down for curves, stop signs, traffic, etc - this is no different. I guess that is why all vehicles on the road are required to have brakes. They can let off the gas and plan - should not be a problem - I consider that a common driving skill.

Maybe this is a case for common sense and you use either A or B depending on the circumstances. If the guy behind has patiently been following you for a while, moving into the oncoming lane before turning left is probably courteous and not dangerous. If the guy behind you was going faster than you, and just recently came up to your rear, there is a good chance they will gun it and try to pass you right when you move in the oncoming lane and bad things will happen. The right thing to do is generally not consistent and firm choice.

This is similar to something I learned years ago while riding motorcycles. If I come up to 2 cars in a row going slow, be damn careful about passing them because the second car may very well try to pass the first car too; right about the time you are in their blind spot.

“A” is known in rural communities as a “Farmer’s Turn”. Apparently it’s where common sense prevails because they don’t want to be a hindrance to others out here. I do this often in combination with signaling early and when the intersection is clear, I proceed to do the maneuver.

Is it illegal? Technically yes, but so is driving over the double solid yellow “islands” that precedes dedicated left turn lanes. A purist would slow down in the main lane of traffic, slowing traffic before driving into the left turn lanes while courteous drivers simply veer left before decelerating over the “island” and into the lane. Same goes with entering a main road from a side street in slushy/icy conditions. I’m going to use momentum to my advantage to get through mounds of snow left by passing snow plows when there’s no traffic. Illegal? You bet. But Newton’s law along with common sense always trumps man’s law.

I do A, and pull into the oncoming lane, as much as I can. Why slow everyone behind you down and waste their time and gas, if no one is in the oncoming lane as far as you can see?

Frankly I wish everyone else would do this too. Especially on the rural 50+ mph roads - you're really going to make my gas hog pickup slow down to 10 mph while you gingerly begin your turn? There's no reason.

He is likely doing it like i do - waiting until he can see all directions before he gets over. Thus, there is never a need to get back over.

Only an animal entering the road could happen and then it is simply like one entering if you are in the proper lane and there is an oncoming car. No different.

I took it to mean 'left turns on a 2-lane road into driveways and the like. Not at intersections...EVER.
