The steam train arrives in Poplar Bluff next Friday and then heads out on Saturday. I hope to catch it at Dexter or up near Scott City

IMO there's not much like UP 4014 to prove that a four-cylinder engine can make plenty of power w/o NO2 or a turbo. ;)

All depends on the cubic inches

I rode the rails once. But too young to remember - 1944. Sumner, WA to Orlando, FL.

More than a century ago Fiat raced a 28.4 liter 4 cylinder of about 75 hp. (Tipo 55) Pistons were larger that gallon buckets. Compression in those days might be 6:1 due to the low octane of available gasoline. No preignition/knock with a steam engine and low grade fuel. btw, IIRC neither had to be run WFO to reduce regen frequency as some may say. I imagine they operated 'hot' enough at any speed.

Big boy is coming up these tracks Friday. Unfortunately I was there last Friday. A week early and a big boy short. Did have a good pork sandwich there though.
It will pass about 2 miles from my son’s apartment, but he will be in class when it comes thru.
