bcp - I would not wait for an evacuation notice, I'd be gone NOW

I was thinking sinkhole.
What I'm reading on the +33 page thread over on Arfcom is that a) sinkholes don't normally form near coastal FL; more in central and north FL and b) building practices at the time is that it's built on piles driven down to rock.

Bigger point is that it's all just speculation at this point.

We know there were problems with the concrete cracking and exposed rebar etc (2018). We have heard that the building shook when the piles were driven for the new building next door (2019). Then there was the constant issue of water dripping into the basement 24/7. Maybe these buildings should be inspected every 20 years, not 40 years.

Experts get 1st clues on what may have caused Surfside condo collapse

At the end of the day, people don't want to spend money, plain and simple. How many times do have we seen it play out where something was said about a hugh potential issue, but the mind set is it will never happen vs the amount of money that is needed to fix the problem, and THEN something happens and it's always someone elses fault? Add in the fact that at least for myself, living in a highrise building (particuarly on a beach / shore area) is kind of beyond a stupid idea to begin with.

i tried to volunteer for an hoa years ago. problem is, the boa management group is basically a committee and we all know about committees.

i don't have a better solution but it comes down to paying a fee for someone else to do the dirty work, among other things.

reminds me of the government.

at the end of the day people just want "someone else " to do it.

problem there is, that "someone else" rarely if ever really cares.

BINGO!

If this were a single family dwelling, and the family was told they had significant structural damage and they procrastinated in fixing the problem and the house collapsed killing everyone inside, yeah, I'd feel sorry for the family, but "it is what it is"...

The 2018 report didn’t indicate a pending catastrophe. Maybe they missed something but more likely the structure deteriorated further (perhaps by the nearby construction).
Two big factors at play 1. Condo assocs always fight over special assessments. Sometimes consultants recommend too much work to be done so that’s not all bad in of itself however I allege it was exasperated by 2. COVID… boards weren’t meeting and especially seniors were deferring everything from doctors to home repairs. I would bet there was clear evidence that would have been spotted by typical testing in the year leading up to the collapse of it has been done.

From what I've heard on the news, the rescue crews are getting under the debris from the parking garage that is still open underneath everything. To me, that means it wasn't a sink hole. I also wonder how the building collapsed above the underground parking garage, but the parking garage is still supporting the weight of the collapsed building?

The 2018 report did not predict a collapse of the structure but it sure seemed urgent enough that repairs could/should have been done.
