Got the cover off the 3pt area, here's photos. Looks like the initial failure was the arm on the rockshaft that the piston presses against, the casting broke in half. Also damage to one tooth on the ring gear and the cage for the pinion gears, probably from the broken casting that fell onto it. So the only good news is it looks like all the damage can be fixed from the back and I won't have to split the tractor. Can't tell if there's any damage to PTO drive because the shaft just passes through this area and wasn't involved. The gears for the PTO are further forward in the transmission. I did try the PTO when the tractor was running, so hopefully it's OK.

that damage seems more like it would have been caused by trying to lift against an unmovable load on the 3 point arms. Even then some pumps have a pressure relief that should have gone into bypass before the main rockshaft to piston rod casting broke. Weird.
Hopefully the damage is confined to the rear of the tractor and the ring gear, carrier, and pinion is reasonably priced.

That relief valve would only actuate if the OP was trying to lift the 3 pt, as in moving the control level.
Usually 3 pt hitches have a safety relief valve in case the 3 pt gets overloaded by lets say, going down the road with a heavy implement in the back and hitting a bump on the road, the relief valve would give preventing something from breaking. Or like what happented to the OP, the post hole digger pulling too hard.
However, after looking at the diagrams on the workshop manual for this tractor, looks like Kubota didn't put one on this tractor. That could very well prevented this damage, unless the 3 pt was already lowered all the way.

Yes, you are right- 2 relief valves while lifting (pump) and 1 for shock loads tied to the ram oil circuit set at a higher pressure than the pump relief.

You're correct, both flanges on control valve are cracked, forgot to mention that.
Yes, I agree that's the way it looks but in fact I had the 3pt control all the way in the lowest position so it could just auger away as much as it wanted. I am more at a loss to understand exactly what happened here now that I've taken it all apart.
I don't plan to replace the ring gear or carrier. I looked at the wear line on the ring gear and it just lifts off at the point where that broken tooth is at. So I'm going to do my best to hand dress that edge and leave it be. Same with the carrier for the pinion gears. There's a small chunk out of the casting but it's nowhere near anything important. The tractor is 16 years old and I put 200 hours a year on it. It will probably last this way until I'm dead.
Is there any more clever way to wipe all the small bits of shrapnel out of the bottom of the cases other than a paper towel and elbow grease? I used a magnet to pickup the steel bits, but some of it came off the aluminum casting.
Found one more thing I found, something penetrated the side of the differential case and made two holes into the gear case area. Here's a photo. I cleaned up the edges of the holes, I'm just going to leave it as is. Those two cases share oil anyway, so I don't think the holes will hurt anything. I looked at the price of replacing that case, wow. I'd spend more than the tractor is worth trying to make everything perfect again. The shrapnel from the holes was lying on the bottom of the case, hopefully things didn't migrate around too much in the oil.
