1977 ym240
i have a ym240, 2 cylinder. The tractor battery wasn't staying charged for even a day! I decided that persons before me had replaced alternator with a single wire type, without replacing the regulator. So, after searching some i came up with a alternator ( 128270-77200 ) regulator ( vr550 ), after looking at wiring further i decided on a new ignition switch ( 08086-10000 ) all from amazon. Anyway, if you have any input please speak up, any help is appreciated. GP

single wire alternators have regulators built in, they are not meant to be used with another regulator.

GP,

Should you need a parts manual, electrical schematics, or the other manuals for the YM240 (aka YM2000) in my signature is a link to the Yanmar Tractor Owners Group.

AND, yes, the thread California mentioned, I've uploaded a few of the Yanmar Service bulletins for the VRs. The older part numbers have issues and Yanmar came out with newer solidstate ones that hold up better.

Again as stated by others, a GM single wire alternator conversion has a build in voltage regulator. It should not be ran through any other voltage regulator.
A GM alternator should be able to be rebuilt by an auto electric shop.
It is very likely that the mounting brackets have be modified for the new single wire alternator to fit.

When I first bought the Ym2000 I had a Charge problem. Ended up finding out I had both Voltage Reg. old and new style. Ended up being the wiring. Bad connection to the fuse panel. After finding the loose connection I plugged up the Old VR. which is a 550 also I believe and it worked fine. So I have both in my dash that work. Here's the 240/2000 Dia. so you have the correct wiring to Chk. everything. New battery and Checked my Sys. just the other day. 14.24V. I went up on the Battery's CCR. to 700 from a 550 that's actually still good. Just weak when it sits. Difference on the start for sure....

After i started looking under dash panel, someone had left the fuse block unwired, the therma start unwired from ignition, and had ran a wire directly to solenoid from ignition bypassing safety start switch. The old regulator was still plugged into the system, the ignition switch they had installed didn't even have enough terminals on it! All these things combined led me to start from scratch with new items. Also, since i have the fuel tank out i'll be getting that oil seal in steering box replaced while i'm in there. Hopefully after all this the little green machine will be set for awhile.

In the thread of, Yanmar - Model Cover Pages there is info on how the YM1300 design was patterned after a John Deere. So, your machine looking like one is a nice compliment.

Could be a LOT worse!

My YM240, photo 2005 when I put on the ROPS. Shows the pride of ownership (!) of a couple generations of Good Ol Boy American farmers. :D :ROFLMAO:

It hasn't gotten any prettier since. Still runs like new.
