I think our whole country has an epidemic of moral decay.
As compared to a girl being pregnant in the 1950's and the family shipping her off and the neighbors knew nothing about it other than the girl in question is visiting family?

Think about that...

Not trying to argue, but I hear that about lynching and wonder has it even happened in the last 50 years?
That being said the criminal justice system seems to have gone about as wonky as the rest of society - somethings are punished more far severely than they probably should, while other (potentially more serious) transgressions aren't punished (or even brought to trial).
Not many lynchings today, It is (fortunately) just not politically acceptable anymore. But the attitudes of many that lead to lynchings is certainly not dead.

You are right about the justices system being out of kilter. It seems to be; Lets lock up the mentally ill but let the white collar criminals do what they will, or gently slap their hand if they get too obvious.

What's worse, a man steeling 10 million dollars electroncially or a man killing 3 people? How do you apply jail time to white collar steeling vs killing innocent people?

There are time when I read about people steeling other peoples identities that I think they should just be killed myself for the low lifes they are.

Over time, things have gotten better, it's just we see so much bad, we forget about the good IMO.
I think you are right. Many things are getting better, and the News Media just magnifies what is bad. But you have to admit, in 1950 not many people were running around will assault rifles shooting as many people as they can.

Wrong comparison. Lets compare a man stealing 10 million dollars to a guy smoking a joint. I don't agree with either, but they guy smoking a joint is more likely to get prison time.

1950 - The time you could drive drunk, beat your wife and no one seeing a problem with it or send your daughter off away for being pregnant, and get away with it.

Good comes with bad, bad comes with good.

I always liked Billy Joel's line in Keeping the Faith... "the good old days weren't always good, tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems".

I find that impossible to believe. Can you provide one example of a person who stole $10 million, was convicted and did not go to jail?

We grow, and we have growing pains.

Over time, things have gotten better, it's just we see so much bad, we forget about the good IMO.

If things kept getting bad over time with societies in general, our country most likely wouldn't of made past 1870 IMO.
Better in ways & worse in others (e.g. personal responsibility, striving for personal success vs. expecting it to be given).

In ways it seems things have gone from: "Even if it's not illegal it's wrong so don't do it" to "If it was wrong it'd be illegal" to "it's only illegal if you get caught" and heading/crossing into "what difference does it make?"

...and good luck reaching a societal consensus definition of "wrong"

No, that is because they get away with it and don't get convicted.

I think part of the issue is that as we grow in a "free" society, we forget that people need to take responsibilty for thier own actions or lack of action.

As I've gotten older, I've come to the conclusion that there are no black and white answers, they generally lie in the gray area.
