Texas Fall/Winter thread!

What I have gleaned from the news so far,
5 members of ERCOT that reside outside of Texas resigned "due to pressure"
Yes, no one is taking responsibility, rather they are saying some other entity was responsible for different aspects of the grid/distribution/capacity/winterization, etc.
FEMA is going to help with some of the damages.

I do think there will be some improvements so that this doesn't happen again or at least it will not fail this bad or for as long.

Do you realize only 108 counties in Texas were covered under the Federal disaster declaration to activate FEMA aid? Gov. Abbott's state disaster declaration was for all 254 counties. The Feds have left the people in most of Texas out in the cold.

Texas gets no electric power from other states.
Likewise they send no electric power to other states when we have a disaster.
You proclaim that Texas independence fiercely.... until you want federal aid.

Wow... I would have thought that kind of vindictive behavior left when the new administration came in... You are Americans, you deserve the same as the rest of us.

Must be new math. :D 2011 is exactly 1 decade. When the last freeze episode in Texas. And coincidentally triggered an investigation that came to the same conclusions. I.E. Need to be ready for cold weather. I don't remember what the scapegoat was that time, but apparently it worked, because here we are 10 years later.

Yes, but the temps weren't as low or for as long. All we got here was 11" of snow (they predicted 2-4!) and I don't recall any wide spread rolling outages, at least none around NE Dallas area.

No, I didn't. I wasn't sure of what relief exactly was being given by who, FEMA vs. state disaster, I just knew some aid was going to be given out. None goes to me, we fared fine.

Nuclear unreliable? How is Texas nuclear unreliable?

Specifics haven't been released, or I didn't see them but it was stated there was some issues with it.

Doesn't change that none to little of the winterization was done. El Paso had been upgrading their systems and they were able to supply electric power in this event. Also probably didn't hurt they were on the national grid, so had access to extra power when they needed.

You missed my point, The winterization wasn't seen as that important even after the 2011 storm because it was still fairly mild and no power issues.

The storm last week matched or set records going back to 1899! One of the most days below freezing at 9 days or so.

I don't believe im missing the point. The study that was done in 2011 suggested that winterization needed to be done and even outlined where the weak points were. The winterization wasn't done.

So's your gas, oil, and nuclear.

Moss, I recognize you are trying to bait me into political statements so you have an excuse to shut this thread down. I have seen you do it in enough threads that your pattern is well recognizable.

I gonna have to agree here. This was a quiet thread until our deep freeze and power failures.
hugs, Brandi

The point I'm trying to make is that all of the systems in Texas failed. Gas, oil, coal, nuclear, solar, wind. All of them. Yet several people keep coming back saying solar and wind failed, yet won't acknowledge that everything else failed as well. Since it's all within Texas, and they are for the most part on a grid by themselves, strictly to avoid being federally regulated, should they then ask for federal help with it when it fails? Yes, they should ask for disaster relief after natural disasters like hurricanes and cold snaps. And it should be given. However, it's time they come in line with everyone else and get on the grid so that we can help them and they can help us in these types of situations.
