Honestly, my wife is a saver of smaller sized clothes (that she will never fit and will never be in style again) and also knickknacks and Christmas junk. She's a bargain shopper, so always adding to her stash in the basement. Luckily, she never runs out of space because I periodically gather and dispose of things that are years old and often in new packaging or with tags. I fill a trash bag, drop in the big steel bins that go to veterans and shed never caught on. I never take a big chunk, just a slow and steady churn of her buying and me removing.

You'd better hope she never catches on or your shop/garage will be empty!! I couldn't sleep at night if I did that!!

My first wife was an accumulator. Then she got sick and got worse at accumulating stuff. The more disabled she got, the worse she got and everything was thrown down the steps into the basement. Finally I had to cut her off from the check book and credit cards. I even put all catalog companies on notice, the gravy train was over. Then it came time to clean the basement. She threw a fit, said it was all good stuff, which a lot of it was brand new but worthless. I hauled it all up from the basement, set it by her chair so she could sort it into two piles, keep and chuck. I then hauled both piles to the dump. She never knew the difference.

Our church is being taken advantage of, we have someone痴 junk stored in our storage building, they needed a place urgently, others felt sorry for them. It痴 been there for years now. Now guy is about to lose his house, behind in payments, etc. We don稚 urgently need the space, but.

Sorry to hear that. No good deed goes unpunished they say. The lesson to be learned by some well-meaning folks is to always set an end date. That applies to a loan of money, a loan of space, a "you can move in with us when until you find a job" and so forth.

I've learned over the years that if you loan someone who is down on their luck $100 and say "pay me back when you can" you do them no favors and you change the relationship from friend to lender/borrower with a very fuzzy verbal contract. Set a condition with a clear date, or give it as a gift. Otherwise it gets awkward and if you see the gift receiver uptown eating an ice cream cone and he has yet to pay you back...you feel a little cheated. Just some thoughts.

There need be no "grief" at all, if you understand and accept from the beginning, that it is money forever gone.
