I guess they don't winterize the windmills down in Texas. My cousin's wife says snow, where she lives is very rare.

The windmills are frozen because of global warming. :confused2:

The frozen natural gas supply was a greater problem than frozen windmills. Both are fixable in the future.

Yes, exactly. Texas did not have or use the equivalent of snow plows on the wind turbines.

Can not let those things spin with ice on the blades as they will eventually throw the ice off at high speeds. For instance the 1.5MW GE wind turbine has a rotor diameter of 70m (230') with a top tip speed of 82m/s, or 180 MPH. Now think about one turbine throwing ice at another?

Now, consider the fiasco which has ensued and ask yourself, "Do I want this quality of management responsible for my health care? Or for that matter, anything?"

But why did the geniuses who got Texas into this situation not fix it before it was broken?

I've given up trying to understand why Texas does what it does.

wind turbines that I used to work on came in 2 configurations, a cold climate and a warm climate version. turbines in Wyoming run when its -40 but they also are more complex.

some generating capacity is/was offline for maintenance and upgrade as this is usually a lower demand time of year. NG pipeline pressures became low and reduced the output of NG power production because everyone was using it, some wells and valves and things froze, but that is not a widespread issue. I also have 11 years working in O&G production. the biggest issue was the widespread nature of the cold. even in CO we were asked to reduce our power and NG usage.

keep blocking / protesting those pipelines and reducing our ability to produce the energy we need to see this become a more widespread issue.
