On the outside of the wheel there should be a pin with a spring that when you push the wheel on the axle it snaps in that groove..

Bingo.. Moss’s video shows this. It appears the spring part has failed.

You will observe that the axle has a notch where usually a clip pops in.
Clip is now trashed.
Measure as carefully as U can, go to the plastic wheel drill a small hole that aligns with that axle notch and insert a cotter in, nail or whatever will engage that notch and U should be OK.
Been there done that!

Another Herbie casualty is often the lid hinges.
What I've done is reposition as best I can, drill and using a self tapping screw to lock my repositioned hinge in place.

Those remotely operated dumper operators are in much to much of a hurry to meet their schedules.
Also being a huge vehicle U have to be VERY cautious when passing one as the rarely look B4 leaving the curb 4 the next bin.
More than once I've been cut off when he swings a left to go up a side street.

Thank you, I’ll try that tomorrow. The lid failed a couple years ago and a dowel fixed that problem. I ended up taking it off since it’s just a glorified wheelbarrow.

Funny how dumb we country folk can be...I never knew that thing was called that. I've never had one. I clicked on the thread to see what a Herbie Curbie was.

I never knew they had such a fancy name. They must all come from the same factory. Mine looks exactly like that one - except it's BRAND NEW. The county road grader caught mine about a month ago - there wasn't much left and garbage strewn everywhere. No arguments from the county either. I'll just bet it was a new operator and mine wasn't the only one caught up by the grader. Where's a raccoon when you need a mess cleaned up ..........

Fixed it!
I drove a #6 screw until it hit the axle and backed it out a turn so both wheels can continue to turn independently from the axle. I have no doubt this will eventually fail so is a stainless screw a better choice?

I couldn't figure out how to use a cotter pin.

Thanks to Moss as well for the video link.
