For the remainder of January, there are three planned Starlink launches, two with 60 Starlink satellites, and one with 10 Starlink satellites as a Ride Share launch. The launch with 10 Starlink satellites is carrying satellites for other customers. So a total of 130 Starlink satellites.

If the Ride Share launch goes up this month, it will be the SIXTH SpaceX launch attempt in 2021! Is that really correct?

The 115th SpaceX mission and the 107th Falcon 9 launch.

A Starship test flight is on 1/14/2021.

The article says the school has received the kits but doesn't say they are being used. The public beta test is scheduled to be expanded southward in the Jan/Feb time frame so we can assume Virginia will be included at that time.

A Virginia school district has also placed an order for starlink. They are hoping to have it running by Feb. 1st. : Starlink

Comparing Starlink to Hughesnet isn't like comparing apples to oranges. It's more like comparing Teslas to bicycles. Congrats on getting an invite. There are 100,000's of rural folks in the USA waiting for that opportunity.

A few day ago, I received an invitation to join Starlink's Beta testing program. I did not read the invitation clearly and just clicked on the link to see the details. That was a bit of a scramble, because you have 15 minutes from the time you land on their page to accept the offer before they withdraw it and offer it to someone else (then you have to wait for the next round of offers in your area, if there is one, or wait for the full fledged rollout.) This was mentioned in the email I received, but I missed that part in my haste to see what was up.

I decided to sign up. Our 7mbps down / 1 mbps up (on a good day) and the lack of reliability were driving me crazy (especially with kids in the house doing a lot of online learning). Streaming movie only happens on the best of days, and then when we limit anything else going on in the household.

Here is the text from their invitation:

Starlink is now available in limited supply in your service area.

During beta users can expect to see data speeds vary from 50Mb/s to 150Mb/s and latency from 20ms to 40ms in most locations over the next several months as we enhance the Starlink system. There will also be brief periods of no connectivity at all.

As we launch more satellites, install more ground stations and improve our networking software, data speed, latency and uptime will improve dramatically. For latency, we expect to achieve 16ms to 19ms by summer 2021.

To check availability for your location, visit Starlink.com and re-enter your email and service address. If available, you will be immediately redirected to the Starlink order page.

Availability is limited so orders must be completed within 15 minutes of landing on the order page. If you are not able to order at this time, the Starlink team will continue to send updates as more capacity becomes available.

The cost was $499 for hardware, plus shipping & tax beings total to $581.94. Then $99/month for service. If it gets me out of this internet purgatory I'll gladly pay it. We'll keep the DSL line for a while, until we see that Starlink has filled the gaps in their coverage.

I suspect that if Fiber to the home ever makes it to our area, we'll probably jump ship and switch to that.

I got the same invite. Than i read up about it. Nearly 600 out of pocket, no guarantee it will always work, no info on data caps. Actually not much info about anything. All i can see is the same crap he pulls on teslas. Charges for updates. Changes options down the line. Desiding to have data caps and your stuck paying 100 a month.
I deleted my invite.

weve been promised fiber to our area, but it wont be for a couple of years i fear. dsl is getting much, much closer. for now i will keep using my microwave based system.

The data cap is a red herring. Our DSL already has a data cap in that it is slow and we can't get much data. UbiFi has worked much better the DSL both in data speed and reliability. I have had some issue with dropped connections on UbiFi for a few weeks in late November or early December but that has gone away. Maybe because we are mostly running on a VPN. Non VPN connections have had some problems though.

Starlink does not have data caps but they might in the future but I think this will be use for people abusing the network. If Starlink put in data caps that prevented people from streaming videos, they will drastically reduce their market.

Though expensive, we have kept DSL and UbiFi, partially out of inertia, partially to have a backup, and partially to see if UbiFi would have problems. UbiFi has worked 99% of the time but it was nice to be able to roll over to the DSL when we did have problems. We have also taken the UbiFi with us to places where we knew we would have poor internet connectivity and it worked great. When we get StarLink, DSL or UbiFi will have to go. Not sure which one though. UbiFi is expensive but DSL is not that cheap either.... Decisions, decisions, decisions....

The great thing, is that we have a CHOICE. :thumbsup:

Hey...how else can he bring high speed Internet to all those third world countries?...somebody has to pay for all those poor folks that are starving to death to be able to stream netflix and youtube etc...
