Hi all,

Just got a used L48 TLB. I have the swing pin but I do not see a boom lock mechanism anywhere. No flip brackets, etc. Maybe it broke off, or whatever, wondering what the best way to secure the boom in the up/down position in for transport. I am ordering manuals but not in yet. Thanks in advance.

Down on the trailer floor with the bucket flat to the floor and chained down.....:2cents:

Messicks diagram shows a locking pin for the boom. Goes thru the boom and operator frame. Not as handy as a hooking type. I’m sure they could probably order one but any good bolt or shaft near that size should work.

The swing lock on my M59 was missing. Made one.

In loader operations pinning the boom up is fine. Transporting on a trailer lower the boom and tie down on the floor as Peter said.

So that's where my hammer went! :)

BTW, that's an excellent picture of the boom lock mechanism as well. Doesn't the L48 have something like that? Can you post a picture of that area of the L48?

BTW, sometime when I get back to Colorado I'll see if I still have the old advertising flyer for the L48 from back when I was considering whether to get that or the M59... piece of history.

Yes...... my 2006 L48 has exactly the same locking mechanism.....minus the hammer!

Just so I am clear, by boom lock I mean something that will not let the boom arm down, not swing side to side. I do have the Kubota supplied pin that stops the side to side swing, but not the boom bleeding down. The newer stuff has locks on it that not only stops the boom from swinging but also stops it from going down. So it locks it "up" in the full up position as well as anti-swing.

I can see where the bucket on the trailer chained down would work peachy.

That leads to another question.... I can get some good deals on 7-ton 20-foot trailers. I know the spec for the L48 is 20' in length (just an internet search). But I am assuming that is with the BH fully tucked in. If I have to drop it on the trailer, will a 20-foot still work, or do I need a 22-foot?

I bought a 20' trailer for my L48 TLB.
I really wanted a 22' trailer, but my building is 40' deep, and I needed the remaining 20' to be available for storing a car (I turn the hoe to one side, and raise the loader, for storage)
I store EVERYTHING inside......my mother taught me to do that when I was 4 or 5.

The 20' works just fine for me. I chain the loader bucket down on edge, and chain the hoe bucket down flat, with inches hanging over the stern.
Of course, chains on all 4 corners of the tractor also. I like chains!

If the storage length does not matter to you, then definitely get the 22', or even a 24'.
Too much trailer CAN be a problem on occasion.
Too little trailer is ALWAYS a problem.

From Messicks website. Has diagrams of the different backhoe components. Any dealer should help you. There might have been changes during the model. Pictures help.

My M59 and B26 have separate locks for boom and swing. Same as many other backhoes I have owned.

25’ trailer allows room to balance the load. The length is just not for size but for balance also. Even trailers the same length don’t balance the same. You don’t want steep ramps with a backhoe. Goosenecks are more forgiving on tongue weight. Lots to consider.

Just bought myself a nice 22' P&J. @smokeydog thanks for reminding me about the balance for the long haul.

I thought that picture in smokeydog's reply post #3 clearly showed both the boom lock as well as his custom swing lock. The boom lock is the claw shaped piece attached to the chrome handle in the picture - except in that picture you can only see the chrome handle and the pivot without the rest of the claw - but I assume it is there.
For unlocking the boom you pull the chrome handle toward the operator and the claw releases the boom. Mine is plenty strong enough to hold the boom up when trailering. No chains required

The swing lock is smokeydog's custom hammer & pin. I'd think it is strong enough for trailering too.

There is no factory lock for the dipper stick or to hold up the bucket curl that I'm aware of. Depending on how far we are going I might consider chaining those. It would be a simple limit chain & wouldn't affect the length of the trailer.

I can balance my L48 just fine on my 20' trailer, but your 22' will be even better, because you can put the loader bucket flat on the deck.

BTW: My 2006 L48 has a boom swing lock pin and a boom up lock pin.
They both appear to be OEM.

Good to know I have a 22foot trailer so I will be fine........:)

Sure you will!
Where/when are you hoping to find a nearly pristine L48?
I do know of one here in New England,..... but the owner is a bit of an A-hole.
GOOD LUCK !!!!

Was surprised to see a pin instead of a hook lock for the boom. Test drove/dug a L48 many years ago but don’t recall how the boom locked. Getting off and on or bending down for a pin wouldn’t work so good. Did they do a design change from Messicks BT1100parts list info?

Having a M59 boom lock operated by reaching back is helpful for me as I must lower the boom to get thru the shed door and raise once inside. Locked when parked so if drifts down it doesn’t hit the closed door. Not the most ideal situation but works so far. Helps exercise my memory. 80% of the time in 3pt mode.

L48 was on my wish list for long time. Simple, more metal than plastic, no computer and pre emissions machines. Seem to hold their value well.

You do have to get off the machine to either insert, or remove, the boom up lock pin.
I have never used either of my boom pins.

Can see and understand the swing pin lock.

Don’t see how you engage the boom lock pin from the seat.

Same brochure has the B26 and L39 models with the new curved backhoe booms and hook locks.

Just blew up the picture and see two long handled pins that allow you to lock the boom from the operator station. Didn’t see the handle on boom lock pin in the parts diagram. A picture of the pin detail might help the OP.
