How does the home warranty work? Do you pay the contractors or do they deal with the warranty company directly? If it’s up to them, I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of service providers don’t want to get involved.

You pay a first call fee of $100. After that all bills are paid by warranty company. Contractor has to get approval from warranty company. Plan that I have covers all appliances including well pump.

Do the contractors ever balk at dealing with the warranty company? I have a friend that had to deal with one on a heat pump (as the contractor) and said it took up a lot of time dealing with the insurance company that he wasn’t paid for, so he leaves it all up to the homeowner to get reimbursed for paying him.

homeowner expectation is that authorized repair contractor will be paid by insurance company, or possibly
claim check written to both parties. Most folks don't get paid for time dealing with insurance companies, annoying as it might be.
This is where fine print of warranty needs to be read up front. Likely the contract has lots of wiggle room so helpful to clear this up before
contractor starts.
Homeowner expectation of being out at most 100 bucks needs to be dealt with. Seems insurance companies can now blame delays on Covid (doesn't everyone?...)
and that brings on more wiggly fine print.

When you factor in the cost of the warranty over the years, is it worth it?

I can see that a good contractor with plenty of work would avoid the additional aggravation, leaving the second tier contractors to deal with insurance companies and homeowners expectations of cost.
But that’s just the opinion of this grumpy old man.

I just recently signed up for such a plan and haven't used it yet. I've had a plan with Sears on our refrigerator, washer/dryer, and a window unit A/C in my shop for several years. The Sears plan was pretty expensive and only covered those 4 items and is expiring in the next 2 months. With the Sears plan I paid nothing, but sometimes got good service from Sears employees and terrible service from some of their contractors.

Contractor I have was selected by warranty company. This is first time I have had a claim.

Got a message from work yesterday asking if I was coming in for a meeting, so I went in around noon. Roads very wet but in good shape, but at 32° I knew I wanted home before the sun set. Knocked out some things, so think today will be a work from home day. Got to almost 40° at work. They got almost nothing there, just a little ice down by BWI airport. But by the time I got home with daylight failing, it was below freezing at the house.
Told son he better clean his car off before it refreezes even worse. So I helped him clear it and the Honda.
It stayed in mid 20s overnight, and some light snow this morning.

I enjoy pushing snow more with a cab tractor.

My first snow plow was a blade on my first riding mower, a wheel horse 212H. I still have it, but mower engine doesn’t run. Mower looks pretty new still, been kept inside. One of these days I’ll get it running again.
Then I used a 6 ft rear blade on my Massey tractor. It’s still behind the barn and Massey is inside. Haven’t used blade in years. It’s rated 30 hp, in bad shape, got bent up on my 20 hp Massey.
Then I got my first FEL on my L3130 open station. I had that for some pretty big snows.
Traded that one for the L3940C.

I noticed our macaroni grill has gone out of business. Liked their food.

I love their bread, and they have a bowl dish with shrimp, chicken and prosciutto ham/pasta that is spicy and delicious.

No more noisy ZTRs.

This coming soon, EGO battery operated ZTR. $5,000. Mows up to 2 acres with 4 batteries (add 2 more batteries for 3 acres).
Coming Soon! The Z6 Zero-Turn Riding Mower | EGO
As a full system with the new charger and four 10Ah batteries, expect the EGO Zero Turn to retail at the $5,000 price point. Given what else is available currently, that’s a pretty nice price for a lithium-ion ZT with the design they’re offering. EGO Z6 Zero Turn Riding Mower ZT424L | Pro Tool Reviews

Compared to this Greenworks battery ZTR for $7,500 to $20,999. Mows from 2 1/4 to 12 acres.

While electric servo motors might make a better substitution for the hydraulic wheel motors, the batteries will be the $$$ link. Maybe do like a locomotive and make electricity with a motor that drives the servo motors.

For now, I'll keep patching up my Steiner that mows about an hour or more with 1 gallon of diesel. :)

30F and cloudy @ 07:15, headed up to a high of 34F for the day. Possibility of a few flurries, but no real accumulation.

Last couple of days have been a little rough, though things seem to be starting to look up.

Probably 100+ (black) birds out at the feeders yesterday morning, along with squirrels, and a young deer cruising through. This morning there was a cat parked at the base of the tree the deer feeder is on ... with a squirrel in the tree about 6' above him. Looking for some breakfast apparently ...

Birdbath seems to working, no ice on it ...

UPS was supposed to deliver the bullnose trim tile yesterday ... didn't show and then the status of the delivery got changed to "Delayed due to weather or emergency".

And that was after I went to the trouble of filling out a Christmas card for the guy, sticking a $20 bill in it, and hanging it on the front door.

I suspect it was due to the fact that there was a little snow on the driveway ... probably 2" or less by the time he got here. They have gotten in the habit of not coming down to the house if there is any snow on the driveway at all. The driveway is probably close to 800' to 1000' long and the only change in elevation is around 10', which occurs over 300' to 400'. Not exactly real rugged terrain ...

The irony of it is, it's probably actually worse today than yesterday, when the snow was fresh ... because now it's packed down and has went through a freeze/thaw/refreeze cycle.

If they don't deliver them today because of a little snow on the driveway, I ain't gonna be a happy camper.

Went to see if I could break loose those water supply valves yesterday. Fired up the MAPP gas torch and ... it promptly went out ... :(

Guessing that it is low enough that it won't light (there is still some pressure in it)

So I grabbed the propane torch and tried to heat them up with that ... no joy. So I squirted some WD-40 on them and let them sit overnight.

Plans for today:

Run out to Menards and pick up order, swing by The Depot on the way back and pick up the black accent tile.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable, productive, and safe day ...
