Not all pumpkin pie is the same. I have had pumpkin pie not fit to eat or it’s fantastic. Pumpkin is my fav and only kind I care for.

Edit: I have had a rhubarb that was real good also.

Rhubarb was my mommas favorite pie, when she got older, I would stop at her fav restaurant and pick up a pie for her when I would go to visit her in Angola.

To each their own. I personally can't stand pumpkin pie. I'd rather starve than eat a bite of one. What a waste of whipped cream. Just eat the whipped cream off the top and throw the pumpkin pie in the trash where it belongs.

You're probably right Lil.

Now apple, cherry, pecan, heck even lemon meringue, now those are at least pies, and fit to eat.

wait, mince meat and raisin is "throw away" for me

Just the term "mince meat" is enough to make me puke. Although there's no meat in mince meat, I get this image of ground hash and Spam in a pie pan. :yuck:

I used to make all the pies during my married years. Pumpkin and Pecan were my favorites at holidays. The local store can make them as good as I ever did. Why bother. I buy now.

Uh, what? Minced meat is the first ingredient of real mincemeat. We always used beef but mutton was also traditional.
It is pretty nasty looking when you see the dark mixture along with the pockets of tallow that forms in the jars after cooling from the canning process.

Sharn Jean hails from East Texas, the home of the annual "Yamboree". They make a yam (sweet potato) pie down there that I think is much better than pumpkin pie, and I like pumpkin pie. For the brave hearts out there, here is the recipe:

East Texas Yam Pie

2 cups cooked, mashed yams

2 eggs

1cup sugar

1/4 cup melted butter

1/4 tsp salt

1 tsp vanilla

3/4 cup evaporated milk

Mix all ingredients well and pour into unbaked pie shell. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour

FOUR PIE CRUSTS

1 egg

1 tbsp vinegar

3 cups flour

1 - 1/3 cup shortening

5 tbsp water

1 tsp salt

1 tsp baking powder

Mix flour and shortening well, then add other ingredients.

Mix well with egg. Do not roll out. Press by hand into pie pan.

Pinch up edges well.

My daughter cuts up squash (baking pumpkin or red kabocha) into quarters, scoops the seeds out, and then roasts it in the oven until it's soft (and somewhat singed). Often adds a carrot or yam, also roasted, and makes the pies from there.
Best pumpkin pies I've ever had, roasting reduces the water content so you've got a true custard to the pies and they're not "juicy" like most are.

When they're in season we hunt minces for their meat and naugas for their hides...!
