That roof ridgeline mount is going to create problems with all modern vented ridgeline like mine. Plus, the pile of bricks/blocks up on my roof looks trashy, IMO. We need a cleaner way and it would be a lot safer not to climb onto the roof! Hopefully alternatives will be developed.
Oh, and is this thing heated? Obviously, it will be facing upward most of the time. Who is going to sit on my roof and constantly brush snow off this dish?

The startup kit comes with the tripod mount and there are two additional mount options you can order separately--the ridgeline mount for $99 (sits on the ridgeline, no drilling required, but needs to be weighed down with 80 lbs you provide) or the volcano mount for $24 (looks like they want it near the edge of the roof and requires drilling holes in your shingles). Diagrams are in the PDF guides below. Could not find a PDF for the tripod mount so I assume it sits on the ground. :confused3: IDK about the heating aspect but I agree with you snow/ice could be a problem.

And exactly how are all the indigent third world people that Musk said would now have access supposed to pay that kind of monthly fees?

Sounds to me like the subscribers who can afford it are going to be footing the bill for those that can't...sound familiar ??

I've seen so many long term problems with roof mounts that it should be your absolutely last resort solution.

Roof or Pole Mounting Options : Starlink

Sounds like different brains can come up with different solutions.

Hopefully the brains doing the public beta test will come up with more mounting alternatives. Since the beta test is northern USA and southern Canada, the snow/ice problem will surely become an important topic. Honestly I am disappointed the antenna must be outdoors. I recall reading several months ago that the antenna could be indoors but unfortunately I guess that was just speculation? :confused2: There are 5 large trees near my house so the antenna location is going to be a challenge.

Wait for the other shoe to drop. Mandatory 'professional installation' for an additional fee

When Dish first came out in the early 90s, they sold a self-install kit with all kinds of goodies. I did my own in a couple of hours. Then moved it twice including to a new house as well as a couple of upgrades. Then they stopped that and required a paid technician visit to do even the smallest things. I also did my own StarBand two way satellite ISP install after a simple web based training and certification course. That install didn't take long either, but they're out of business now.

I'm thinking the same satellite TV and ISP companies will get into this and convince the ISP that we weenies are too stupid to place a pizza on a stick and run a wire.

I have seen some so called "IT Professionals" that couldn't run a wire and make it work to save their ***

Starlink is kind of like cell phone tower except we are rotating and the satellites at a different speed. The antenna will keep grabbing different satellites like we grab different cell towers when driving from point A to B. The old system satellites are in sync with earth antennas. I guess the satellites are < 100 degrees apart relative to earth surface.

It does not sound like you understand the way Elon Musk thinks.

Got it queued up, thanks for the movie.

Hope you enjoy it as I did. Some Sci Fi does not work for me but I really liked the intense story line and I did not anticipate the twist.

Brings a whole new meaning to not posting your location on TBN.

AT&T here in my area has opted to to go wireless for it's rural customers rather than invest money in outdated technology like DSL. It's their Fixed Wireless Internet and is more than capable of meeting the FCC Broadband requirement. It works well for me. I don't blame AT&T for dumping that wireline service but I do have a problem with them abandoning their customer's all together if that's what really happened. No wonder Frontier went bankrupt. That didn't happen here. Selling off local market's is nothing new. Sprint spun off all of their local market and debt years ago with Embarq which is now CenturyLink. But it all comes down to where will the company make the most money and that part of it makes total sense. Any investment in outdated copper technology is a waste of money. But it's better than nothing.

Man, you took the words right outta my mouth.

I try to use the term lawyers. A rose is still a rose but, for some reason, they don't like the word lawyer so that's all I use. I know, gross generalization.

Here's something from left field. Leonardo De Vinci was illegitimate. That was common and accepted. Because of his illegitimacy, he was not allowed to finish school but far more important, he was not allowed to follow in his fathers profession. At the time they had guilds. If your dad was a banker, you gonna be a banker. If he was a baker, you gonna be a baker.

But only if the child is legitimate. If the child is illegitimate, he could not join his fathers guild!

So, because he couldn't join his fathers guild, Leonardo went on to become, imho, the greatest mind in western culture, possibly in the entire history of the world.

His dad was a lawyer. Thank goodness he liked to play around!

While this nice new fancy Starlink system sounds great and the projected price is high but not much different then its competitors, it has one point in particular I would be concerned with.

It may be faster to deploy then a good fiber network and I am going to sound selfish but my main concern would be North America; Asia, Africa, Middle East and even Europe are not my concern.
What about EMP either man made or by natural solar flares it has disrupted communication systems especially satellite already just from natural occurring instances, it also effects copper and all electrical systems.

Without some information on that aspect at all points, at this time I would still much prefer land based fiber optic systems.
Which at this time I am not able to get and at the current rate of progress may never see.

Land based FO systems use a substantial amount of electronic and electrical components and are in no way immune to EMP.
