The government and the telco's brought copper to US households at one time.

I'll leave it at that.

Different times. Copper was cheap. Labor was cheap. TelCos were near monopolies. Everybody needed/wanted a phone. No options like wireless available. Wired or nothing. Most people never traveled very far from home. Brought prosperity to places that would have faded away.

Yes and Tesla as well. EV's are going to be Mars mobility system. Many belief systems calls for life on Earth to end. Many civilizations have come and disappeared over the eons of time.

I have given up on knowing the future because of BS I was taught as a kid. When I was in the 3rd grade I told my teacher in front of the entire class that dinosaurs never existed because they were not mentioned in the bible.

Today I am making a focused effort to be around with my eyes and mind intact in 2050 to witness Elon Musk broadcasting a podcast from Mars.

I find history from the steam engine forward very interesting as in how invention after invention boot strapped civilization forward. I missed what Henry Ford did for transportation and farming and came close to missing the advances from Elon Musk and company.

Starlink has a real shot of getting info world wide. I just hope it is not used to prove dinosaurs never existed. :)

Many are now advocating a Starlink sat system for Mars when the first missions there start

Couple weeks ago Starman and the Tesla roadster did a drive by Mars to:thumbsup:

Fiber was run in a lot of places because of a gov. mandate...in many places it will NEVER be used...

Please elaborate. How do you know this?

Please elaborate. How do you know this?

Just ride around in rural areas...you'll see thousands and thousands of the stanchions / risers where the fiber is buried...they usually end where the pavement does...the logistics of expanding it further make it economically impossible...especially where the majority of households reside on unimproved roads/lanes...

...I have seen quotes of $10K per household to expand along anything but (improved) paved roads...

We have had fiber to the house for 10 years and live in the middle of nowhere in western Kentucky so we're high tech rednecks I guess.

I think Starlink may longer term impact Fed funds for laying cable in some locations.

Actual location does not dictate or equate to the logistics of placing FO infrastructure...access and the terrain are also factors...

Chances are if you still have copper (telco lines) you are stuck with it or wireless...most telco's eliminate copper anywhere it is feasible...

In the case cited they have saved 10 years of the high cost of maintaining and servicing hard line copper service...

Must be a thing in your area. I live rural and install fiber for a living and I don't see this in our area. Thousands and thousands? Really? Fiber is typically spliced in a hand hole or pedestal. I'm not sure what your referring to. Never heard those terms in the fiber world.

Obviously living in a flat world (Kansas) you are not familiar with mountainous regions...and the obvious difference in logistics...
...I don't work in the industry so I'm not fluent with the vernacular...but I do know what I'm told by the techs that service areas that only have copper...

I know they ran fiber along all or most of the paved roads in this county 10-12 years ago and the techs tell me it will never be used...it's a big running jokes between the techs that worked for the (Verizon) contractors that got paid to run the fiber who now work as copper techs...

Toto...I don't think we're in Kansas any more...

That's for sure. Here in Oz we actually use the fiber we put in the ground.

They ran fiber down the main roads and some of the rural back roads here to DSLAMs (remote terminals), spaced roughly 2-3 miles apart. From those they spliced in the copper that goes to the homes. I was only getting 3Mb (barely) until they did that. I now get fairly stable 25Mb down and 1.5-2 up.

The point I was relating is that they (mostly Verizon) got monies from the gov. (previous admin) to run the fiber...they took the money and laid the fiber knowing full well it would never be used...

That's what they did here too. Not sure why they did it that way. I have no idea what kind of speed they're getting...the same year Fairpoint (telco at the time) ran fiber in my town, Time Warner (now Spectrum) did the same. TWC was ready first, so we went with them (and now have cable tv!!!! no OTA to be had here).
Prior to the fiber run we were too far out for DSL.

When they ran fiber here they strung it on poles, nothing buried.

In other words, you and I paid for a fiber run to nowhere? Sounds about right.

Don't be discouraged, Elon's promise may become reality in the near future. :confused3: IMHO there are going to be millions of customers, the result will be lower cost (aka supply and demand).

I typically get 50 meg down and 10 meg up on my Netgear 4G LTE Modem and Netgear Router behind it for a whopping $22 a month for unlimited data on my Mobley plan. I think I'll stick with what I have.

I need satellite internet like I need an electric car

It does not mention anything about a contract length of time required or can it be dropped at anytime without penalty. Also are you responsible for the equipment setup?
