Some time ago I heard a HUGE crash from out back in the woods behind my house, and I was here at the house. I also heard a chainsaw but it sounded further away on a fence line I have with my neighbor. Anyway, some time later I asked my neighbor if he was cutting tree's down over that way (he has an outdoor stove) and he said NO...

Today I went back there and this is what I found,

that's a BIG oak, 30 something inches across.

I don't want to cut my way back in there, so it's going to be a pretty good pull to get it out. SO, looks like there's some good firewood in my future!

Oh let me guess, that looks like big oak to me, what'd I win.......... Also looks like a lot of work with pinched saws, but why did it fall down when there was no wind, thats the question....

I cut a little more today before the rain started to rain, piled up one more toothpick and quit, thought I had the camera on the wood pile but can still see its a bigger toothpick then my tractor can lift.....

The answer to that is so obvious even I know the answer. The tree wanted to make a sound when it fell in the forest, so made sure it did so when somebody was around to hear it.

The last time I heard trees make a loud noise was back in the (98) ice storm, I could hear limbs and trees snapping and crashing half mile away day and night, it was kinda eerie during the night.

That tree is next to a swamp, (wet area) and I'm betting a previous wind loosened the roots up and later, over she went.

Luckily it wasn't as bad up here, my power was only out for about 12 hours. That was a bad storm though. For several years afterward when traveling through the hills of western Maine I was amazed at the utter destruction.

We had an Ice storm like that when we lived in Oklahoma, I remember standing out on the front porch listening to the trees falling out in the woods.. it was a bit eerie..

Had one like that is Texas too.. lost power for 4 days..

Wow I learn something everyday, a swamp is a wet area!!!!!!!!!!! Then a so called previous ferocious wind loosen the roots up then on a quiet calm clear day you hear this gigantic tree fall over half mile down in the woods, a likely story. I'm betting a spaceship landed to close to the tree and knock it over and I also think the tree is gender neutral........

It's the quiet still drizzly dark air then the loud crash from all directions thats spooky. I was without power for a week then finally the sun started to come out glissading off the ice, then the ice started to drop off, a pretty sight but not as pretty as the army of power trucks.
