Is that a rock the beam is setting on? At the risk of being redundant... why does he do all of that work, yet have such scary footings?

Yup he sets post on rocks, he likes rocks for footings.

Once he gets the walls up it probably won't make a difference. In hindsight mine was a petty observation, considering how much work you/he are putting into it.

No walls, he said just want a roof to keep snow of the cedar boards he saws.

I took the day off and worked between the rain drops, more like helped out. We got the first carrying beam glued screwed and bolted together, then we lifted it in position, wheres feather hydraulics when I need them.... Now the 100 dollar question will it stay up over winter......

I glued up my 30' beam with 3/4 CDX between the layers, I glued it up that way, because they are much stronger when you do that...

I put it up by myself, of course, with the help of my tractor,

It went up quite easy...

You did it the right way but with a sawmill I refuse and wont buy plywood until the roof falls down three times, then only maybe. I see your tractor has the reach, mine was at loader limit and the other side is higher, might have to build a bridge to get the beam up there.

I confess it was me but dont tell anyone. I think your the only one who gets firewood but never cuts a tree down whats up with that..........

Around here we have forests as thick as they come but I seldom cut a tree. The Doug firs have small percentage of natural root rot fall overs and other species blow down in the wind. So it is more a case of harvesting the ones on the ground. I have about 80 acres of trees to pick from so that helps.

Seems like a strong wind against the high side of that roof would flip it.

I agree, and I dont see any fasteners through the post into the side of that deck either.

Maybe he only takes them when he needs them, and puts them back before they notice the poles are missing?

Lol you got it. But actually the center pole was long abandoned on my property from a house that had burned down in the 80s, and then knocked down by a dump truck building the nieghbors driveway as he hit the old wires (thankfully de-powered by then). The outside poles are one newer pole that I cut in half. The power company just threw it in my neighbors ditch with no explanation, and a year later I was tired of looking at it, so I grabbed it up, early one sunday morning. Don't tell on me. :p

The poles will sit all the way to the outside edges of the footings/abutments, which are 8' wide. I will hang my decking a bit further over on each side too, for a bridge width somewhere between 9 and 10 feet, TBD.

That's a pretty nice bridge footing Deezler. How much span do you have there ? Looks like your fall foliage has barely started. Ours is almost over - very short lived this year.
gg

Thanks. The span is right at 16 feet between the abutment walls. Correct, our leaves are just getting started around here. Some maples are vivid colors already but I don't have many of those at my place. We've had a warm and dry spell for the last week. But chances of frost this coming weekend should get things cranking.

Yeah Old Path, I feel lucky that my creek doesn't really ever dry up. Gets about this low and then stays this way even through a month of drought. It only drains about 600 acres above my place but must be enough elevation drop to catch some ground springs, too.
