Curious what unusual restaurant menus or policies you've seen? Here are two:
One local restaurant they list about eight sides on menu, at $2.49, some $2.69 & $2.89. Months ago I asked the owner why? He said "because a serving of french fries is less expensive than a serving of broccoli ".
My reply was "define serving".
We could tell he was flustered, now we notice new menus that list all sides @ $2.69.
Another odd one another restaurant today has about 10 sides. Each entree said "comes with 2&4, another with 3&7", etc. I ordered and asked to substitute one...they showed on menu "no substitutions".
Anyone know why? Sides are in separate bowls. I can't figure it out.

If you cannot grasp that different foods cost different amounts to buy and prepare, do not go into the restaurant business.

Oh I absolutely did grasp that even as a child. But the owner did the common sense thing which is average everything, then proportion according to price.

Seems like everything has gone up, food, haircuts, hardware. Some quite significantly.

That only works if he sells the same number of servings of all of them. I do not average the price of all my oil filters.
Restaurants here typically price sides individually or in two groups.

Just went to order printer ink today. $18.98 about a year ago, $42.00 today. Other sellers with lower prices but no stock.
This is what you need Rick. I just filled mine for pennies, pint bottles and a hypo. 20200924_183532.jpg

I wouldn't average oil filter prices either. But I'm talking about food in a dish. Ten foods all same quantity would cost different amounts. So you have a full bowl of mashed potatoes but 3/4 full bowl cauliflower. The owner took my advice, he makes the same profit...just different size servings.

My heart goes out to any business owner going through this covid mess. How they can pay rent+overhead is beyond me. Glad I retired after having a business 40+ years.

Ooohhh, you just brought back bad memories for me..... I used that setup once.... I was filling the black Cartridge and must have put too much ink or too much pressure on it.... POP! I looked like a darn Dalmatian for a week.... no matter what I tried, couldn't get the spots off! I will NEVER fill my own ever again! I really wish I took pictures.... I can laugh about it now.

And then what does he do when customers start complaining about some servings are too small? Can't win. To me, it seems ridiculous to fuss about 20 cents when you are the one sitting proudly being served. Just my :2cents:
Which also happens to be your increased tip if you pony up that extra 20 cents if you are cheap. :confused3:

How does his pricing put you out? He has to manage it and total it. Not you.

I致e owned restaurants, as a side business. Food cost has little do do with the menu price. Try to keep it under 30%. Good luck!

Oh and btw, you don稚 own a restaurant, it owns you!

Many restaurant owners I know are hard hard workers, but not rocket scientists. I was both in the rocket science business and owned restaurants. I did ok with one restaurant but failed miserably with the other 2.

If the owners would tell you the truth most will say they own a 60 hour a week job and they barely get by, and work their *** off.

You guys think what you do is tuff? Not even close!

Interesting. We broke with tradition and ordered generic cartridges with excellent reviews. But thanks.

We did that about a year ago for the first time, and they work just as good as the brand name.

We purchased the same $ amount and ended up with about 5 times as many cartridges with the generic brand.

Oh...me too! I've made a real mess. Now I use a small 1/2ml needle, one squirt. One for each color, wash needle with rubbing alcohol. The Canon cartridges have a small hole under label.

I am hoping for a similar outcome. We opted for a single set to start as we do not print a high volume of pages and I want (relatively) fresh consumables. Thanks for sharing your experience.
