Years ago I was the only person staying at a state campground, the last week before they closed for the winter. I had my pick of campsites, as I was setting up my tent I noticed a big dead yellow birch so decided to move. I was eating supper when I heard a "crash" then what sounded like water running. The tree had fallen over, breaking an above-ground water line. There wasn't a breath of wind, it was just that tree's time to go. Had I taken the attitude that it wouldn't happen to me, I would have been right in the fall zone. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure... and keeps your local tree surgeon in business.

Birch trees often let their tops rot off.
My small sports car suffered a rotted top dent on a day that was dead calm. Left a grapefruit sized dent in a fender.
Birch with dead tops are often referred to as 'widow makers'.

Here in Tyler, we have trees falling over in town all the time. One of my clients had a tree fall on her house from the neighbors house. Act of God, so she had to deal with it. I did all the interior repairs, and a roofing company rebuilt the roof after the loggers cleaned it all up. Huge mess!!!
A year or so later, I was working on her neighbors house on the other side and she came out to say hi. While we where visiting, a large oak across the street fell over. It was at least 3 feet thick at the trunk and it slowly just fell over in their back yard. It fell perfectly and didn't do any damage to anything. It also didn't make very much noise. The people in the house didn't hear it happen!!! It fell slowly, kind of like it was laying down.
In both cases, there wasn't a lot of roots, and nothing of any size.
I think that when they built those houses back in the 50's, they removed all the trees, and then planted new trees after the houses where built. Those trees spent their entire life being watered by sprinklers and never developed a large root base. Then after a few heavy storms that saturated the ground, they just sort of fall over from not having anything to support them. It happens every year, and it's fairly common in the Spring.

I have always said that too!
I watch a lot of Who Dunit Type Crime Shows and I swear, either the murdered people were joggers, or are joggers who found the bodies. I think a few times the joggers were one and the same.
I concluded...better to not jog.
But then again, along the same lines, I told my wife (gingerly) that she was "chubbing up" and should probably eat a little better and work out. I was taking my life in my hands saying that, but she took it pretty well.

I was not silly about it, I used ye olde "I am concerned for your health" angle, and she agreed. She has been working out, watching what she eats, and dropped a dress size in the last 5 weeks. That is pretty good...
