Is this wise? Or just a bad idea? I’m thinking about it....

Maybe a canopy with a quick release design?

Only if you don't intend to actually fold the ROPS.

I know that my JD 4105, as a required Australian import, had to have a folding ROPS. The US version (as stated by TBN owners) had a non-folding ROPS.

I've only ever folded my ROPS twice... once was to see how it worked :) and the second was an attempt to run an electrical line inside it to a lightbar.

Two words ....

taller shed.

More words ....

I found that raising and lowering the bar was putting fingers and other fleshy and boney bits at risk. I figured a few hundred bucks of wood and steel would cost far less in the long run.

I had a canopy on a folding ROPs. It's not an ideal situation as the fiberglass canopy (in my case) could be damaged when folding unless something was used to support in a semi-folded position.

When folded the canopy height was fairly high or at least well above the ROPs hinge point.

Even with the hassle it worked to allow garage entry when tractor repairs were needed.

For an occasional folding of the ROPs it is OK, but if done frequently it would be a pain.

Better a big, wide straw hat from Walmart or Tractor Supply for $15.00

No, no. The canopy is one of the best additions I ever made to a tractor. Huge help in hot sun, best protection for skin cancer (which many of us oldsters have), even turns water when caught in a short rainstorm. The hat does none of these (though I realize Jeff was a little tongue in cheek with the hat.) Folding ? I have had my main tractor now for 9 years and never had any reason to fold the rops. Thankfully it does clear the door, barely. Of course garages/sheds/barns are never big enough and the doors are never high enough either. Remind yourself of that next time you build an outbuilding.

The redneck way - attach some pvc pipe to tractor and get some cheap golf umbrellas.
