Waiting for first cup of coffee to cool enough to drink. 34° with cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 44° with mostly cloudy skies. Got lawn mowered yesterday. Need to do some trimming today. May get some drone time in if winds stay low. Need to do a little shopping at Menards.

When the Camp Fire swept through here, it burned all the chipper piles left from the Saddle Fire, two years earlier. In the time between, some of those piles spontaneously combusted. And some homeowners used the chips as mulch, and saw them burn in the CF. Chipping seems like a lot more work than burning in my book, and it doesn't get rid of the fuel problem.:confused3:

With FireWise and Trailblazers in the neighborhood the cut trees and brush are all mulched and used on the trails and landscape. At the park we line the brush along the trail and once a month a skid steer puts it in a big pile for burning I think. The first months cuttings are still sitting in a big pile in a cleared area. Moving and disposing of the brush is 3/4 of the job. Last week we had 3 chainsaws and a bladed weed eater going and accumulated 6 large rows of brush. Our groups are getting bigger as people are venturing out of lock down.

On the farm I had a Sears 10 hp muncher but just mulched cedar and dried cow pies for organic compost for the garden. To mulch everything I cut was more than I could handle. I had some burn piles and a large pile in a hole that I just let rot. A lot of times I just pushed the brush to the side and let rot like the time Ron and I cleared the West fence line trail.

I do not burn. No access to water where I would burn. But do chip with my 8" WoodMaxx chipper. My tractor can do up to 5" without stalling. One of those times I wish I had a bigger tractor. I have spread them around my house gardens for years. I am now removing the dirt from gardens that the chips have composted into. If I lived in an area where big fires can happen I would not leave chip or branches where they could help increase fire damage during fire season. Maybe dig a hole and bury them.

Sorry about the meatloaf, Thomas. No five second rule in NH? Couldn't you rinse it off and warm it back up? Sorry, too, about the back pay, but it would seem your choice to retire when you did was a good one.:thumbsup:

The older I get, the more good friends I've lost, Rick. All hard to take, hard knowing "there but for the grace of God"...

Neighbor came to collect his big trencher yesterday, and forgot all about returning the hammer drill he borrowed. I guess it's a lot easier to remember to borrow stuff than it is to return it, and now I need it to get the generator mounted, the next job on the list.:grumpy:


Finally got the electrical conduit test fit in the trench yesterday morning. The last bit of rock took a long time with the demo hammer, then more with it to break concrete away that had escaped the foundation forms. Now I just need to clear all the rock out in the rest of the trench, and lay in the conduit. Think I'll get an early start and take advantage of the cooler temps. Then siesta this afternoon.

No problems with my mask at the barber's yesterday, but I was surprised he wasn't wearing one. I won't be surprised of the local health department shuts him down.

The Kubota parts never made it to the Kubota dealer in Medford, so that trip is off until next week. No surprises on the trip to town yesterday; the van ran fine, but in the "Daylight Headlight" section of the route, learned that the LED headlights interfere with radio reception. I keep an old iPod in the glove box for such occasions, but still hard to hear anything with all the racket in the empty back of the van.

54 outside this AM. Heading to 65, with a "nor-easter" type storm moving in. Temps overnight expected to go into the freezing range. Time to cover the gardens again.

Got all the grass cut again, and weed-whacked. Just in time for the rain, so I expect to be cutting again on Monday.

Need to cut some cedar branches off a fence line, cannot get to a back area without going through standing water, and I don't like doing that.

Oh, went up to my other suburbia yesterday on the way home from a hike with the wife. Stopped by a grocery store and a big box store. The grocery store was well stocked with everything one could imagine, pre-Covid....except for TP...LOL. Quite a contrast to the other grocery stores an hour west of that place. It sort of plays right into how the pandemic is hitting certain areas, while missing others. It was a non-scientific explanation of supply and demand in my thoughts. LOL.

After I posted Crane picture. I heard a lot of honking in backyard. It was Lonesome George chasing the other 4 Cranes out of yard. No wonder he is Lonesome. I have never flown with Cranes around. But squirrels take off into the woods when I fly. Drone is not going to fly today. Unless winds die down. Constant 15+ mph so far today.

52°F and rain this morning, going up to 57° today. Rain should end by late morning. Low of 33° predicted for tonight.

Stepson didn't have any work yesterday, so The Wife had him come over and work on clearing the pasture fence line. I walked out and took a look when I got home, and it seems he did an OK job. He left me some stumps to remove, but other than that it was pretty clean work. Wifey said she noticed some hoof marks in the pasture near the back gate. We took a look while out there, and followed them out to the newly planted corn field and about halfway back to the next property to the east. It appears the new guy back there decided to ride his horse through ours and our neighbor's fields (corn is up about 2" already) and into our pasture before turning around and heading back. May have to go have a talk with him.

While we were talking about the plans for the pasture (dog park / agility course, and new shooting range) and the new fencing, I told her about Eric's kissing fence. After showing her a few via Google, she liked the idea. The concept is similar to how many dog parks have double gate entrances, but it only requires one gate. Not too sure how well that would work taking a dog or three through, though. Probably just end up building a double gate.

I think our NWS forecasters are running around in circles trying to decide what to forecast. Yesterday, we had a forecast of 100% chance of rain last night, but before nightfall, it was lowered to a 70% chance, but included a chance of "severe" weather and high winds (we did have up to 40 mph wind gusts most of yesterday). Last night, I awoke right at midnight and noticed it seemed rather light outside, so I walked out on the back deck, in my bare feet of course, and found I was stepping in water on the deck. However it was not raining at that time, clear sky, and a huge moon up there. So, back to bed until after 5:30 a.m. Only .27" of rain in the gauge, but overcast skies, and the NWS showed 64 degrees going for a high of 66, but now they've raised the forecast to a high of 71. And skies are clearing. Looks like another beautiful day.
