I have searched this question in a dozen different search engines with no real help at all.
Hopefully, some of you guys will know.
Considering the 1962-1965 Ford 2000, what does one look for to determine whether a tractor is a "Utility" or a Wide-Front Row-Crop ?

>>: On EDIT: I was looking at some photos I have of what I think is a "Utility" sitting beside a Row-Crop Tricycle, both examples are 1964 Ford 2000.
The rear axles on the standard tractor go straight into the wheel-centers; whereas, the wheel-centers on the tricycle are offset quite a bit lower than the axles; will this offset axle business make the definite identifying difference between a Wide-Front Row-Crop and a standard "Utility" ?

Thanks for reading and all help is appreciated.

As you say, rear axles on all purpose tractors fasten directly to the hubs while the row crop axles have outboard drop boxes. Another definitive simplistic way to tell the difference is all purpose tractors of that era will always have steering boxes with a pitman arm and drag link on each side, row crop tractors will have a single pitman arm and drag link regardless if it has narrow double front wheels, a single front wheel or a wide adjustable front axle.

Thanks ! That is information that I can understand and use.

I will assume the 2000 used same front end as the 601 or 641. The way they got the rear tires to two row width was turning them around. The one row (52 or 54 inch wide, not sure which it is) but for single row the rear rim has the dished side out and for 72 inch double 26 inch rows the dish is turned in. Think that is only two options. Believe the rims are single piece rim. If you will be just use to pull say cultivators you should get decent traction with the tire running backwards. If you will be tilling with it then you need to swap the rear wheels to the other side to keep the tread running proper direction. If you are swapping the rear wheels you need to have jack or stand under each side of the rear end as the front axle pivots and you can drop the tractor or worse it comes off a single jack and lands on you.
The front end has holes ever few inches to remove the bolts from current holes and insert them in the proper holes to get the width you want. If it is made as I think the front axle is a very wide angle "V" and it will not affect the steering moving the front in or out. They running steering linkage to each wheel and there is no rod running between the front wheels.

My in laws had the 601 and mostly used it for single row crops but I used it a few years for two 36 inch rows of corn and soybeans.

A 2000 prior all purpose would look like a 641. A 2000 prior row crop would look like a 741.

Not aware have ever seen a 741. The most popular model here was the 601 and then maybe the 641. Only difference I think was the gear ratio. In my area flu cured tobacco was the money crop. All equipment was bought with it the driving force. It was raised on 52 or so wide single rows and the bigger row crop tractors just were not common here till maybe the late 70s. We did see some using really wide tractors being wide enough for two tobacco rows. Think those were all JD, well in my memory they were.

The 741 had the same engine and hp as the 641 but in rowcrop style. To the OP, the 2000 prior rowcrop would look much the same as this but in blue.
