It's funny (or ironic) that talk of drinking squeeze would arise with the current pathogen scare...
...Anyone remember 'The Andromeda Strain' ?....a pathogen from outer space was collected by a satellite that crashed in a small western town...the pathogen killed all but two people in the town...one was a baby and the other was sot who drank squeeze...it ended up being what save him...

WOW! I'd forgotten about that movie. How fitting.

I remember watching that movie with my mom. I got really upset during the scene where Kate Reid's character went into a seizure with all the red lights flashing. My mom had to explain to me what epilepsy was.

That might be a good movie to watch if you're home self quarantining. Lots of good actors in that flick.

I think the movie is considered the first "techno thriller"...FWIW...there is a sequel recently published 'The Andromeda Evolution'

From an article late last year:

The late Michael Crichton's literary archive and production company has authorized a sequel to his breakthrough novel The Andromeda Strain.

HarperCollins announced Tuesday that The Andromeda Evolution will come out Nov. 12. The book will be a collaboration between science fiction author Daniel H. Wilson and CrichtonSun LLC., for which the author's widow, Sherri Crichton, serves as CEO.

Its publication marks the 50th anniversary of The Andromeda Strain, Crichton's techno-thriller about scientists fighting a lethal extraterrestrial microorganism. Released when Crichton was just 27, it was later adapted into a feature film and television miniseries, with Ridley Scott among the producers.

"It's exciting to be shining a spotlight on the world that Michael so brilliantly created and to collaborate with Daniel Wilson," Sherri Crichton said in a statement.

"This novel is for Crichton fans; it's a celebration of Michael's universe and a way to introduce him to new generations, and to those discovering his worlds for the first time."

The Aliens series of movies plot kinda reminded me of the Andromeda Strain plot, only in space. Bring in an alien species to weaponize it.

...Anyone remember 'The Andromeda Strain' ?...

For some odd reason, one scene that stands out in my mind from that:

Two Military Officers knock on a Doctor's door to announce 'we have a fire'. When he gets ready to leave, his wife gets all upset about him leaving their guests during a dinner party.

TP is running low here but not out, most people I work with are more concern over a beer shortage. I think there are groups of people trying to create a TP shortage so they can make money on ebay. The good news is paper mills and loggers are now hiring..............

Psalm 119:165 (KJV) Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.

Been watching The Walking Dead series and I'm disappointed there are few to no shotguns. Always handguns and assault rifles. I'd figure there'd be hundreds of thousands of shotguns laying around after the apocalypse.

Use to watch the show regularly. That show jumped the shark a couple of years ago, gave up on it.

It would seem that eventually there will be a glut of TP and I'll get some then when the price drops.

All about revenue, just like the tax on booze, gasoline and everything else you consume. Gotta support the gummit, you know, all those highly paid politicians that decide what's best for you.... The American way bud, live the dream.

We all need gasoline or fuel to drive, boss.
I think 90% of us believe fuel is a necessity. I can see taxing that by its consumption as somewhat "fair".
Smoking is not a necessity. In fact, its a scourge on society. Its should be illegal or taxed to the point where it's not practical.
This latest virus highlights the dangers of smoking and its cost to all of us in the extra health care costs it causes

Older Daughter wanted a career change so she went back to school for a Teaching Credential a couple of years ago. It was just plain scary trying to help her prepare any sort of computer-based instruction for her own students in a manner that would earn her a fair grade from her own grad-school instructors.

She and her fellow students often couldn't make use of what their professors provided to them. First barrier was the faculty had always lived withing the closed world of Macs and refused to offer any help to PC users who couldn't read the Mac-based online instruction, tests, links to other sources, everything. And the professors couldn't view what these students prepared on their own PC's, or they considered anything non-Mac so alien that it wasn't considered first-rate work.

These Credential-school grad students were mostly recent BA graduates and had used PC's for years, now they were being told to come on campus and use the Mac's in the computer lab if they wanted to earn a good grade.

I helped daughter with several work-arounds (rtf for example) to produce work acceptable to get good grades but it was a PIA.

What I'm getting at is, I doubt that many mid-career elementary school teachers have the expertise or hardware for preparing online coursework, or any concept of making it readable to PC / tablet / phone owners.

I am a high school teacher who is now facing the creation 3 weeks (or more) of distance learning for my students. I think most teachers have a pretty firm grasp on what is needed for that. There are so many online curriculum platforms that make this a breeze. (we use Google Classroom) Add to it a few Youtube videos and you are set. Now I am not saying students are going to take it seriously, but there will be learning for them to take advantage of if they choose to do it.

Do you think the success/failure of this method is most determined by Parenting skills at home?

If I have a friend/neighbor that is desperate for supplies that are sold out, I'll help them out. I won't price gouge them either, probably just give them the goods. We are all in this together and we will get through this together. Remember, we still have to live together after covid-19 is long gone.:drink:

My wife and I went to a 60th Birthday Party last night. They served a Buffet Dinner. Were somewhere around 50 people there.

Last night I had more direct contact with people outside my home than I've had in the past two or three weeks.

Today I may be carrying this virus. In a couple weeks most of the people at that party may be sick. By then how many people will we have been in contact with?

The steep climb of infected people is simple mathematics.

Yeah, except that never works......see the current illegal drug plague as an example.

What might be tried, IMHO, is more responsibility. You smoke for 50 years after getting clear warnings it's not healthy and get lung cancer ? Either you pay for your medical costs (no government aid) or you die.
