The fecal shedding raises many questions. Do septic tanks need to be decontaminated if used by an infected person?

I don't know if it has reached The Villages in Florida yet but that could be bad. Anywhere that large numbers of retired folk are concentrated would allow the virus to thrive.

This site has a ton of information, links and useful advice: FlattenTheCurve | COVID19 Update & Guidance to Limit Spread

Even if the fatality rate is only 1% (which is certainly a low estimate) that's still 10x the flu. And covid-19 fatality rates are much worse in old people. But a big problem is the number of ill people with respiratory failure. Many of those survive if they have access to a ventilator. But no country has enough ventilators for the number of cases they're getting or going to get. In the hard hit parts of Italy they're having to triage access to ventilators. Old people or people with pre-existing conditions that make them succeptible to respiratory problems don't get ventilators and they die.

"Anywhere that large numbers of retired folk are concentrated would allow the virus to thrive" the virus will thrive among people of all ages. But old people are more affected by it and die at higher rates.

I can't visit my Brother in the VA home where he lives because it's quarantined. My BIL also lives there but is currently in the local hospital for an issue. I can visit him...….

This is why quarantine never works.

Why is the death rate so much higher in Italy than in South Korea? Both industrialized nations with you would think good health care.

Italy: Confirmed 10,149 with 631 dead and 724 recovered.
Korea: Confirmed 7,755 with 54 dead and 247 recovered.

This seems odd to me. Perhaps Italy has so many more old immune compromised people?

I understand Italy has the oldest population Europe.

The Med cram vid i linked says the possible link was the use of the anti Malaria/zinc treatment that was tried experimentally in South Korea there is a more than order of magnitude difference in survivibility in the critical cases when this treatment was used.
Shutting down the RNA replication of the Virus in the cell seems to be key.

vid starts where chloroquine may have been difference in Italy /S Korea

Interesting research piece out this morning saying the difference may have been that S Korea used tactics to spread out the number of cases - social isolation and such - from the get go. And so the load on their medical facilities was more manageable. However, Italy waited and let things go then jumped in at the last minute. The surge was much greater and Italian hospitals couldn't keep up. Some European newspapers have articles about Italian doctors reserving limited ventilation equipment for those under 65 - which results in a higher death rate for those over 65. The report compared the responses of St. Louis and Pittsburgh during the 1918 flu. St. Louis used social isolation tactics and Pittsburgh did not. Both had similar numbers of cases, but St. Louis had fewer deaths because theirs was stretched out and the hospitals were not overloaded as much. Makes sense to me. And indicates we should do the same things nationally now. I don't want to get the bug and need intensive care and then - at 75 - be told the hospital is overwhelmed and I'll have to stay home.

Looks like it is now being labeled a pandemic.

+1...

The Michigan Governor (she's an idiot) declared a 'state of emergency' this morning with 2 confirmed cases. Tin foil hat time, I'd say. She needs a tin foil body suit too.

If people used some common sense in dealing with the KungFlu, all would be good. Issue is, common sense is a rare commodity today.

Make book on it's coming to a town near you at some point. Just like the common cold or the Asian flu. Be cognizant and practice good health habits and stay away from compromised idiots.

The Chicken Little, sky is falling philosophy prevails. Sad state of affairs but par for the course today.

South Korea has also done a lot of testing. They even have drive through test centers. Unfortunately our government response seems to be closer to Italy's than South Korea's.

here's an article on what's probably to come and why even with the "low" death rate it is still a huge problem: Simple math offers alarming answers about Covid-19, health care - STAT

this points out why its important to "flatten the curve"- slowing down transmission means that we won't overwhelm the medical system as much.

Some of our local hospitals have already set up big tents in their parking lots.

I have a 'big tent' on my property. Called a Clearspan Truss Arch building. I store round bales in it.......

I understand Italy has the oldest population Europe.

Doctor friends in Europe have long said medicine is skewed to the unborn, youth and employed years

We had long conversations about 85 year old hip replacements covered in USA routinely and not so much there

^^^ That is what the experts have been saying since the Virus became public knowledge.

Many Nurses have now made a Public plea for PPE and other Vital needs and are outraged at the CDC's weakened guidelines.

As CDC further weakens COVID-19 guidance, nurses outraged by failed federal, state, local, employer efforts stage day of action Wednesday to demand protections for nurses, patients, public | National Nurses United

They know what is likely coming to the hospitals they work at

The (Flattened curve) is Really Important because of the math involved with a spreading disease.

Reduce the likelihood of over running the hospitals and spread the treatment of sick over a wider timeline.
