Hydraulic line wear

   / Hydraulic line wear #21
I worked in a production plant for 16 years building mobile hydraulic equipment and that metal edge would get a piece of 3/4" heater hose split and tie wrapped on as a softener and/or added spiral wrap to the affected area of hose.

Heater and wire ties do wonders to protect hydraulic lines. I several spots where a hose can come into contact with a metal edge. I split the heater hose, cut to length, wrap around the hydraulic line, and add a few zip ties. This has worked for many years on my Mahindra. I need to look at the hoses on my new tractor for any possible wear points.

This is a easy, cheap, and quick way to avoid problems.

Another solution would be to stop them from moving by clamping them to the bracket. Hydraulic hose clamps like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Twin-Tube-Clamps-Diameter-Plated/dp/B013WYM94U/ref=sr_1_13?keywords=hydraulic+hose+clamp&qid=1582770770&s=industrial&sr=1-13

will keep them from moving. Since you have 4 hoses, you'd need 2 clamps, but they do make clamps for more hoses.

Since those hoses run to the FEL, I'm thinking they may be intended to move within the bracket, though.

Yep. As the FEL moves the lines to too. Just a bit but they do move. Otherwise a couple zip ties would solve the problem.

So as an update...

I cut the nylon covering I bought to length. However it was not wide enough for the hydraulic connector to fit through. It was wide enough for the line though. So I slit it down the side and wrapped it around the line in the appropriate spot and secured with two zip ties. Did that for each of the four lines. That should solve the problem for another several years.

but they don't need to move. it's better that they don't move..

So if they don't need to move how did they get chafed?

Sounds like you got it done and that's all you really needed. Good luck.

Then why did they move?
Good question.
Probably because the hoses move quite a bit when pressurized. In fact, you can see the movement it in the wear pattern on the hose.
It's time to put a radius on that bracket - or cut the front off and replace with a large thru bolt and rotating pipe.
Add heater hose if there is room.
Replace the worst of the hoses - it won't last the year. You can have one made at our local hydraulic shop for 20/30 bucks. Watch the others.
luck,

take a look at how the high quality tractors secure the hoses, any difference to yours?..

Thanks. Just pisses me off this could have been solved at the factory for $1 or less of material.

it's about profit, they'd have to charge $1 more, and would be out the replacement sale of the hoses that wore out!.
