L5740 and 2000lb pallets

I was able to lift those pallets both from the PU bed and from ground level. I did nothing to "juice up my loader" but with normal manufacturing variations, perhaps I am at the higher end of systems pressures. Dunno as I have never measured it. As I noted, it was notably light in the rear but not bouncing or lifting or anything. I would hate to hit a hole or anything when I was doing it, as that might have been the end of it all, but I was working on mostly level, graded ground.

Technique: The safe way to unload from the rear of a semi-trailer is to lift the pallet 1" to 2", then stop, shut down the engine, get off the tractor, then have the truck drive out from under the slightly elevated load. When the truck is out of the way, get back on the tractor, put on the seat belt and lower the load very, very carefully with the tractor stationary.

I would lower the load with the engine OFF. Others will differ.

Ground must be level, smooth and hard.

Great point! Several years ago a forklift operator at a local supply house was unloading a truck from the side and had the truck driver pull forward. He remained on the forklift and somehow the load got snagged. He was crushed to death.

Happens more often than you think... forklifts in general are dangerous when folks aren't careful.
