TESLA Electric Truck?

Do you mean like this? Chevrolet Silverado 15 Hybrid Models, Generations & Redesigns | Cars.com

Details on this, just as the newer 2019 offerings are slim. If memory serves me correctly though one of the selling points was that contractors would be able to drive to the job site, then use it to power their tools.

I have never seen one of these trucks before as far as I know.

Owning an EV does give a way to sidestep home generator ownership. While this is set up for different power needs than we have in the USA it is interesting because it is based on EV's on the market today. I have no idea of cost and function. I notice it connects directly to the Leaf battery through the DC charging port.

As I understand it Leaf's charging system and the plug on the car are of a style that can let the car feed power back into the grid during a power outage. While the style more common in the US doesn't have this capability.

Anybody know more details?

I don't want to see this thread overwhelmed by the nay-sayers like the EV thread I started in 2017. That thread got closed by a moderator after some 800 replies, after the scorn for EV's, financial analysis pointing to the value of EV's, and basic scientific research, became overwhelming.

Here's an example:

In response:

"Oh, we understand, be careful though, you'll end up in a dumpster someday".

A couple of other participants took this more seriously than I did and PM'd me to be cautious. One said he would contact that poster's local authorities if I suddenly quit posting.

It seems that some people take resistance to change, as seriously as they take their own deeply held religious beliefs.

That's incomprehensible to me.

Cali, you over-react a lot and take things too personally. You also invited that comment from HS with your comment about ‘not keeping up’ which you omitted from your quote of your own post above. Chill out and quit it. We are trying to have a polite discussion here. Thanks for your positive contributions to this thread.

I am just thinking out loud about the armor glass; what happens in emergency situations when you need out and can’t get the door open. Laminated glass can be almost impossible to bust completely out.

I am thinking of truck sinking in water or fire after a wreck before EMS shows up with equipment.

Won’t future models be able to turn into a submarine like the James Bond car? :D

Ok, I could probably use a more transparent sense of humor. That Bob Dylan quote seemed to me self-evident but I now see it could be offensive.

Thanks for your positive contributions to this thread. TBS
Thanks, you too. This is a fascinating subject.

I didn't buy the Chevy Bolt that I started that thread to learn about. Bolt looked ideal for my frequent 100 miles between home and ranch, except ... its tiny, it wouldn't fit the stuff we take. We buy groceries before driving over because the ranch (orchard) is in what has evolved into expensive tourist country (frufru wineries everywhere). For now the elderly Outback and Focus Wagon remain in service until something better comes along.

I'm hopeful the Tesla Y will live up to the hype. If so, that will be our next car. Self-driving or at least accident avoidance may be significant features in the future after they are more competent than old human. Which I'm ageing toward .

Recent photo - loading apples & persimmons harvested for our city friends, and for a food charity. I frequently do light towing like this. (The Tesla truck is too huge to interest me. :))

A local guy powered his fridge and freezer after hurricane Dorian with his Chevy Volt. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/electric-car-hurricane-dorian-1.5274674

The basic concept was that he spent about a hundred dollars for 2000W inverter and then plugged them in. He monitored the battery drain via the volt's console but that wasn't a requirement since the system would automatically start the car and recharge the battery as required. It turns out that was not even necessary as the car was still at 40% charge 4 days later when the power came back on. The cost of the inverter was easily covered by the hundreds of dollars of food he would have had to throw away after four days with no power.

Also, what about those people who refuse to pay attention to their fuel gauge and is always running out of fuel?

Not sure how some dummy running his car out of gas is different from some dummy running his EV out of electricity. Except that instead of walking to the gas station with a gas can he will have to walk there with a booster pack.

Or call Triple A, just as the maroons do who run out of gas now.

You can add Tesla Powerwall(s) which have 13 kWh of battery that will fake your PV system into staying operational during an outage plus make up for what the PV is not producing... for a while. IIRC the first Powerwall is about $10k and then $7500 for each you add thereafter.

Too rich for my blood and I'm not convinced the batteries are "there" yet.
