I don't know about you guys, but the more I learn about my Kubota BX2670, the more disappointed I am in the overall engineering and reliability. It looks like Kubota decided to use two cheap filters in the design and do not use a water separator. I realize I need to someday do the fuel/water separator mod, but that's a project for the future as I need to move snow ASAP.

Because my fuel filters are freezing up during cold weather, yesterday I attempted to replace them. The filter on the left side of the engine is easy to replace, but the one underneath is more difficult. In the design, Kubota decided to install the fuel filter underneath some kind of skid plate that's not removable so access to the filter is very difficult. To tell you the truth, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to change this filter. Has anyone else had issues getting access to the underneath fuel filter on their BX?

The BX I owned was bought 10 years ago but the skid plate could be unbolted on it. After that it wasn’t to hard. I added a Racor to mine, that helped and was mounted for easier maintaining. I had the Racor gel up once but at least you could see it through the fuel bowl. I also had the little factory one gel up on me twice.

Wouldn't an anti-gel additive prevent the gelling? IIRC, my 2009 BX2660 had only one fuel filter and the skid plate was a bolt on (4 bolts).

Filters don’t cause gelling, untreated fuel and cold temperatures do.

SPOT ON CORRECT!!!
I never understood why people will bash a brand because of their own ignorance and or neglect. I guess its just easier to put the blame on somebody else.

If your newer model is like the older ones the fuel line does not have a valve so you have to pinch the hose to change the filters. I extended the line and put in a valve. Then I moved the filter under the hood to underneath so both can be changed easily in one operation. Always planned to install a spin on but it keeps getting out prioritized. The one on the outlet of the booster pump should not plug up much. As var s I can tell it is to protect the injector pump.

Leaving the machine outdoors in the elements doesnt help either.

I keep wondering what the expectations are for compact SCUTs - scaled down versions of full sized tractors, all the accouterments, and the same operating capacities as the big boys at a fraction of the cost? When shopping for a vehicle are you considering serviceability or does the machine color and number of cup holders suffice?

Your on to something Mike!
I dont think anybody really goes into it looking at the serviceability when buying anything. Shiny NEW paint syndrome! Its up to the buyer to look ahead of any service situation though. But people today are so "gotta have it now" that they dont prepare for the future of anything that will have to have something done/fixed before it dont work. Case AND point! Not many people even think about a plan "B", much less a plan "A" anymore.

agree...
Also add to that if a person is an infreq. users (ie: fuel sits for more than a few weeks in their machines and outdoors) but still insists on using untreated biodiesel in winter often are inviting problems in on themselves with geling, algae, etc..

Biodiesel in summer ok but never in winter for me.

Biodiesel can hold 10 - 20X as much moisture versus non biodisel

Just switch to this setup and be done with it. Also, start adding anti gel to your fuel when it starts to get cold out, the filter won't solve the gelling problem but will be easier to service for sure.

Heck yeahhhhh.... i bought Mike`s filter kit for our BX23s. Its a 100% awesome kit. Nothing needed, everything is in the box when Mike ships the kit to you. Excellent instructions as well, with photos.
And its soooooo nice to be able to change out the fuel filter without crawling underneath the tractor anymore. Only took one time dealing with that OEM filter and i said ohhh heck no, and bought Mike`s filter kit. ZERO issues since!!!

How about part numbers and where you got your filter at. I`m sure people will want to save money where they can.

And whether or not this installation protects the electric pump.

Great point Rick. I`ve got my large filter in between the tank and the electric fuel pump. That way the fuel is filtered before going through the pump.

I service my neighbours BX2680. I didn't think it was hard to change that filter underneath? Only thing that sucks about it is it is messy because even when you pinch the line you still get some fuel spillage.

I

I figured you did and I’m thinking his does not.

I`m thinkin your right, i dont think his is installed before the pump. Only way to know is if he says different. His looks like its between the front filter and the injection pump.

Well you`d think so until your out there underneath the tractor in a snow bank in the freezin cold and the tractor is dead...lol

I have Mike's filter kit and it is the best mod I've made to the tractor. It protects the fuel pump and is much, much easier to change than that original one underneath. Bigger filter, too. Well worth the money IMHO.
