T5C Terramite
I am rebuilding crowd cylinder on was looking at a post earlier to tear it apart it went well, however is there a tool I need to insert the piston back in the cylinder without ripping the seals, or any suggestions as to how to keep the, from tearing.
Thanks

I use a ring compressor. Oil everything up good, squeeze it down just enough with the compressor and tap it into the cylinder. Don't forget to check the groove for any sharp edges or burrs before you start. Good luck.

If you don't have a ring compressor a properly sized radiator hose clamp will work.

Thank you very much

We used electrical tape 1-1/2 tuns around the seal very tightly and leave a tail piece of tape sticking out so that once the seal starts in past the groove you pull the tape out before you go all the way into the cylinder and repeat for second seal. Works slick
! But now if you need to replace a cylinder we went to Home | Terramite Replacement Parts | United States and their replacement cylinders have thread in bearing blocks and unified pistons that have a wear band and 1 seal ring that is much easier to install and last a lot longer than the OEM . Great people to deal with.

I just replaced all the piston seals on my terramite . The guy at the hydraulics shop told me to take out the inner stabilizer seal and then its much easier to get the piston back in the cylinder without tearing. I asked him about the possibility of losing some strength in the seal by taking out that inner seal . He told me if I did, it would not be a lot and that once the piston seals are in the cylinder and under high pressure , they flare out and stabilize.

I took his advice , and getting all the pistons in the cylinder were quite easy . I figure if my loader is supposed to lift 1500 lbs...and it now will only lift 1200 lbs, thats fine by me because I did not want to spend a lot of time trying to get the new seals in the cylinder, or risk damaging them .

If they don't make a difference, why do they bother to put them in there in the first place? I looked up piston seals with and without the ring and the ones with the ring are rated at 5000 psi, the ones without are rated at 250 psi. I think you should find another hydraulic shop.

I sure hope what they told me at the local hydraulic shop doesnt prove to be a huge mistake. I dont wanna tear apart all these cylinders again..LOL….

I will know in a couple days, when I go to use the machine.

I wanted to specify that the guy at the hydraulics shop did not tell me , they dont make a difference. He told me that the piston cup seals are much easier to install { without tools or fear of damaging the seal upon reinstallation into the cylinder casing} BUT, he also told me I would lose a bit of the hydraulic power by doing this....I told him the front loader on the terramite was rated to lift about 1500 lbs or so...and he told me that by taking out the inner stabilizer seal , I may only be able to now lift 1200-1300 lbs { which was fine by me }

. I put new piston seals in my terramite cylinders and I took the inner stabilizer seal out of each piston cup seal , which made it much easier to install the cylinder rams ...no special tools needed...just a rubber mallet. I used the terramite yesterday and the front loader easily picked up a 12 ft long hickory log that probably weighed at least 500 lbs .

Im not suggesting anyone to use my method of taking out the inner stabilizer seal...im just giving my personal account of doing it.

I did a little looking in the Parker engineering area and it seems that the o ring is there to keep a tight seal at low pressure until higher pressure forces the cup outward. So it would seem you would have more of a problem with things lowering when not under load than with maximum pressure. Learn something new all the time.
