Harbor Freight Tools that don't suck

Decisions, decisions, decisions ....

HF has this on Coupon for $54.99, canopy only, no chairs: 1 ft. x 1 ft. Slant Leg Pop-Up Canopy

Northern Tool has their version for $59.99 including two folding camp chairs and no additional charge shipping.

I don't need it for a while, so waiting for shipping is no issue, but are the two chairs (that I could use, but don't really need) worth the extra $5? Yeah, I already know. Bigger question is about any differences in quality.

I've had the HF labeled one for a few years, it looks just like the one in the link. The cover fell apart late last year with sporadic use. At one point wind/rain bent one of the accordion supports but I was able to weld that back together. I still have the frame but no cover. It served well for the $50ish I paid for it but it really only gives 8x8 shade. If that's enough then cool but I would prefer 10'x10' straight leg units to get the full shade.

^^ Kind of wish NT would increase their store count. Closest one is about 80 miles and requires a trip over city roads I don't care for.

Don't feel bad. Be glad you don't live in northern New England, we're the last place pretty much any chain store comes to. Many never come here at all. I don't think HF had any presence here even 5 years ago.

Got my five 9.99 items for 30% off each. Well, four and one 4.99 item, but whatever. Picked up a free tarp. Grabbed a $20 Warrior 1/2" hammer drill with the 20% off. Couple other small things. Receipt shows $24.82 'savings' and a $59 total due, so not too shabby..

Northern Tool doesn't have any stores in the western half of the country - west of Kansas, Texas.

Their mailorder service is ok. I recently bought a space heater, and the gadget to hold an angle grinder to make it a tabletop cutoff tool. I added 2x welding helmet lenses and shouldn't have added their inexpensive felt winter slippers - they are way smaller than the listed size. Aside from the useless slippers, quality of everything is fine. Their on-sale price on the space heater, the type with concentric in/out vent through the wall, was notably lower than local Home Depot for what I think is the identical item.

I wish they would open in the west.

NT has a LOT more on their website and even more by phone than the stores carry. A reasonably full line of 3 point implements for one and parts for them by phone.

Nov 1 I did an unusual amount of online ordering for me... 5 different purchases coming from around the country...

All have arrived except for Northern Tool Honda Generator order and it was In-Stock when ordered... because I made a point to ask.

Were the other items as large/heavy? Those go by common carrier, not normal shipping services.

No... the generator has shipping weight of 54 lbs... the other Northern items coming separately total 4 pounds... nothing yet... not complaining only saying I was impressed at how quick Amazon and Ebay and JC Penny and Kohls arrived...

Never shopped Kohls before but did some gift buying and the box was large and almost 40lbs... well packed and arrived quickly.

I don't buy much outside Lumber yards and electrical/plumbing supply house stuff... Home Depot not so much... worry too much about the truck after several break ins during broad daylight mid-day... it is a shame but that is the reality... makes me think the SF Bay Area is the capital of Smash and Grabs...

The restaurant near the Hospital had 5 smash and grabs last weekend... and just about everyone I know has experienced it... 4 at church during services two weeks ago... I now spend most of the time walking the parking lot...

The boss was working late a couple of weeks ago, parked right up front driving a 15 year old BMW convertible... nothing inside but a toll pass... the thief "Cut Out" the rear window totally to get into the trunk which had nothing... the damage to the body, top and top mechanism is extensive... package tray, etc... pretty bold, well lit and in full public view and again nothing in the car except a toll transponder which was taken... which was the only thing in the car.

At least when I shop Harbor Freight I can park up close and generally not gone long... sometimes the big box stores can be half hour of more...

Sign of the times when the victim is blamed for having a coat or lunch box in a car as "Justification"
