YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office is investigating an overnight fatal shooting in Ypsilanti Township.

Investigators told Action News a 30-year-old man mistook his 31-year-old wife for an intruder and shot her.

It happened Thursday morning around 2:30 inside the couple's shared home on Desoto Avenue off the I-94 Service Drive.

The couple's two young children, ages two and four, were inside the home at the time according to police.

According to investigators, the couple suspected an attempted home invasion earlier in the day.

So, he's a little bit on edge, goes to sleep, thinks his wife is next to him. When wakes up again, sees what he thinks is someone who is in his home, grabs his weapon and pulls the trigger," said Derrick Jackson with the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office. "

He is in big trouble...especially is either of them were fooling around.

A little training would have been helpful if it truly was an accident.

I'd watch this until it has been investigated before believing that story. Sound's like he was looking for an excuse to get rid of her. At best it's involuntary homicide.

Tragic accident my arse. The guy was either a total idiot who should never of had a gun in the first place, or this was murder.

Did they call the police and report the "attempted" break in earlier in the day? I'm guessing no. I can only think that the police are calling this a tragic accident because they don't want to raise the husbands guard up while they go looking at them both in detail.

^^^^^ What they said above . One of the first thing I'd look at were insurance policies (if any) .... Also if legal and he would "volunteer" drug test husband . Maybe you can get too if and why there was an earlier"home invasion attempt" . At least for starters . Hope he doesnt "flee" while this being investigated . Sounds to me like he (husband) is gonna need whats left of the "dream team" if still in law practice to represent him .

I'm sorry, with 3 other people in the house excluding the husband, the husband didn't realize his wife wasn't in bed, and there was no light so he couldn't identify his target or he didn't think to let the intruder know he had a gun not knowing where his kids were at as well? I just can't fathom the stupidity scale on this one other than he was just setting his wife up.

I dunno........I think for now though, I'll go with the husband at the 100 percentile level on the stupidity scale.

Everyone is innocent until proven guilty in the US justice system.

That said, some cases seem more apparent than others per guilt or innocence.

I wouldn't expect the legal system to incarcerate a man only on my opinion.

However, I'm certain the reality is in murder cases (for better or worse) some get looked at more thorough than others as far as where the leads may take you (or come to a dead end). On the stupid scale, this guy should be looked at for a long time even if the leads up come up dead. The added reality is (and I honestly don't know but guessing) is that since for the time being the cops don't have any hard evidence other than stupidty, they didn't want to press charges so soon.

I do believe that stupidty isn't a automatic get out of free jail card.
