Hey guys, new to the forum and couldn't find a post on this so if there is one already, I apologize!

I recently bought a Bush Hog RTS-74, 6 foot tiller for my 1978 Ford 2600. Got a great deal on it, but after inspection, it needs new tines. This tiller requires 48 tines! FORTY EIGHT! I've checked prices everywhere, and the cheapest I can find them is $8.50/tine. Anybody here got any recommendations on cheaper options? The bolt distance for attachment is 4 & 3/16" from center hole to center hole. Does bush hog make their tines out of gold or am I just a tightwad? Thanks for the help in advance!

These folks have reasonable quality stuff. Whether they offer tines for your machine is for you to determine.

Tiller Catalog Search

Shipping cost is a concern. Your Bush Hog dealer should offer a freight free option.

High strength, abrasion resistant, virgin steel alloys are more expensive than recycled steel. More expensive to buy, more expensive to machine.

Your LOCATION should be part of your T-B-N PROFILE, like your tractor make and model.

Relative to your first post, tine shipping could be 30% to 300% additional to tine replacement cost, depending on your location.

Jeff,

Location updated. That's not information it asked for when the account was created, so....

Understood on the type of steel you are referring to. Quite likely this would be the last set of tines I would ever have to buy. My garden is only about 1/2 acre but I will be expanding it next season to about an acre in size.

Thanks for your input and I see why you're a super member: 8,379 posts!

You are just a tightwad... BUT, that may be OK, depending on how much you plan to use this tiller...

The tines will cost about what I paid for the used tiller! Lol

How much do tines typically cost?

The tiller will be used at the beginning of each planting season to till up about 1/2-1 acre for our garden

The

Now you know why it was so inexpensive and others were priced higher.
And that there are things to look at when buying used implements.
That right there is a FACT!!

And now he will use "cheapo" bolts or reuse old bolts and then be back asking why he is having so many "tine problems"!!

And, usually being a tightwad cost you more in the end!

When I needed new tines for my Howard HR-8 ( 36 tines ) I did a search on ebay and found someone selling replacement sets. Mine was the same machine as a JD 660. Jd wanted almost 700 for a set, this guy delivered the same thing for less than $300 with the freight. Same manufacture that both Howard and Jd subs the job to, same good quality part. I didn't find that being cheap on my part was a problem, it was the same part in fact. Just how much you wanted to spend on the same part. I'd look for that same part on ebay, give them a call, I bet they have or can get parts for yours. By the new bolt sets, well worth not having the problems, and not that expensive.

I also had the same situation when I bought my used Kubota 5' tiller years ago - it has 36 tines. Kubota tines were going to be more than the $600 I paid for the tiller. My local Co-op found some for about $250 for a set and they have held-up very well. For several years I tilled a couple acres with it and now only my 30x50 garden twice a year and they look like they will outlast me !! Kubota doesn't manufacture their own tines, just stick their NAME to them and charge twice the price.

I did look at those tines before I bought, Rick. I didn't get out the measuring tape to gauge wear, but they appeared to be in good shape. That is, until, I went to till with it and it would only till about 2 inches deep.....yikes

Sawyer, it will be used at the beginning of every garden season to till about 1/2-1 acre plot. New tines should last me the rest of my life as I don't have a lot of rocks in the soil where I live....
