How does your garden grow?

Great! I have been watering the tomatoe plant itself, what's left of them. How to water, without wetting the plant when they are lying on the ground???? Probably too late.

What a waste of time, energy and money! Depressing actually!

All the cabbages in this row except the one on the end started dying today.
Nobody has been in the garden since Thur. when the rain started. We did
receive a little over 8 inches of rain in the last 4 days. I have some other
variety of cabbage planted and it is unaffected. Never saw this happen before.
Anybody have any ideas.

Just eating some cold left over BBQ asparagus (fruit stand bought) from the weekend. To my taste, there isn't much tastier!

And the fact that it does not involve meat, makes it that much more appealing.

I would pull one up and dissect it. I suspect that you will find the roots have been destroyed, possibly by too much rain but more likely by some insect larvae.

I have never seen that on established plants. I also would look at the roots. I had simiar happen to about 100 cabbage once, but when they were very small. I blamed mice since I was using weed fabric between plants and I figured the mice used it for cover and went down the row.

Jstpssng, goeduck I pulled one of the cabbage plants. The roots look fine. No rot or insects. The stem is crisp and full of juice and no discoloration. They are wilting just like they are drying up. If I get a chance I will take one to the ag extension agent to see what he says. I noticed it is starting to affect some other cabbage plants I have planted away from the garden.

That's too bad. I was thinking of cabbage maggots, although they usually attack young seedlings. If you do get a chance to take them to the Extension agent please post back, I would like to know what they say.

That looks good. My father could lay plastic so that it looked like a fitted sheet on a bed, whereas mine is always lumpy, uneven, and the wind always seems to get under it. He tried to tell me how he did it but I still can't get it right..

Its hdpe plastic ordered from amazon. I got 3' wide, but comes in other widths. Will have to see how it handles crab grass. Also get lots of staples to hold it down.

Used to use landscape fabric, but it kept getting thinner, to the point last year weeds grew under it and shoved the staples out of the ground, plus crabgrass still grew through it.

Have you maybe over fertilized them? that can put a coating on the roots so they can't take water in.

I bought a 100 foot roll of 3' wide landscape fabric at the hardware store this spring for $29.95. Wouldn't you know, the very next week our local salvage/discount store (Marden's, to Maine members here) had the same stuff for $9.99. I also have some wide black plastic which my father gave me, every year that's what my tomatoes get planted in.
