How does your garden grow?

Same here. Easier to look at the thermometer outside when the dogs get me up at 3 AM to piddle.

Having said that I would like to have a soil moisture meter. I am guessing they register temperature as well? But I cannot guarantee that at that time of day I will be able to retain the (3 AM) readings In the morning. :confused3:

Maybe after coffee, strong coffee. I am known for making coffee that pours like molasses :D:

Don't get me wrong I'm all about old school, and a cup of coffee that will melt your spoon . . . :drink:

I'm waiting for the sun to peek thru this morning so I can pick some yellow squash..
The green beans made it thru the deer feedings & are sprouting..
The zucchini has come in nice but I like them alittle bigger than they are right now..
The deer or rabbits found the watermellons.. they started eating the leaves so I had to cover them yesterday.
The cabbage has started turning in on themselves.. probably be another month before they're ready..
I cant hardly standit.. I gotta go git me some squash.!!

12 x 28 tilled and hopefully get some compost tomorrow to till in and fill our raised beds. whats a good ratio of compost to clayish dirt for a veg garden? 50/50?

/ How does your garden grow? #1,624
Really depends on the clayish dirt and the type of stuff that is in the compost used. My personal advice would be to pick up a soil meter and check the PH of everything you want to mix, then mix accordingly to get to the PH levels that are preferred for the stuff ya wanna grow.

I got 6 yellow squash off the other day & the Mrs. cooked up real nice w/ onions.. yum yum..
Went & got 4 nice big zuccini this morning.. time to make some bread.!!!
The green bean are lookin GOOD.. prob. get a bucket or 2 Saturday..
Found some worms in the broccoli this morning.. time to start "dusting".. I wondered WHY they weren't producing yet.. cuz the dam worms were eatnm'..
The watermellons TOOK OFF after I covered them w/ netting so the deer/rabbits couldn't eat the leaves..!!!! I KNOW they grew at least 3 inches in a matter of days..

Trouble with either one of those is that they're so prolific that not even halfway thru the season you're sick of eating it, and have run out of neighbors, friends, co-workers to pawn the excess off onto.
Neither stores well either.

Planted yellow squash one year, learned lesson.
Hard squash (acorn, butternut, hubbard, etc.) is bad enough, at least it keeps and is way more versatile.

Yes but they are so good when small. No so much when large. As a kid we used to hollow out the big zucchini and float them down the irrigation ditch to have some fun and get rid of them at the same time.

The wife makes zucchini bread.. its SOOOO GOOD..
I used to take it to work & the salesman & office workers would beg me for some.. they ended up paying me for it..LOL.!!
I would take it in the shop & let the mechanics eat it for free.. lol
& I NEVER get sick of yellow squash.. I get pizzed when she blanch's & freezes it at the end of the season..
not so much when I'm eating homegrown squash in the middle of winter tho.. lol

Pumpguy- in our soils, do we tend to be more acidic? Do you find yourself having to use a lot of lime?

That's why I have pigs, to take care of some of the excess. Right now I'm feeding them dandelion greens, it's nice to finally have a use for them.
I also have some apples and acorn squash left over from last year that I have to remember to feed to them.

A while back we noticed a really strong, strange smell in our kitchen. For quite a while we could not figure out what it was. After noticing it was stronger by the pantry I started pulling everything out and found a hidden clove of garlic. I will remember that smell from now on.

I've had a similar experience, except that the potatoes I had put away the fall before were starting to spoil. There aren't many things that smell worse than rotten potatoes. :(

I know we are off topic but.....recently the wife started ordering can dog food online and saving us a trip to Walmart way too often. Last order was about 20 days worth. Kept noticing a random smell. Turns out one 12 pack case had a couple busted cans in it. It was shrink wrapped. Smelled like a five day old dead and bloated cow. I threw away the remaining “good” cans out of that case.

I love the smell of crushed garlic and of tomato plants. Also cigarette smoke in the distant air, but not close up. Amongst other things.

It’s nice to hear that I’m not alone, I thought that there was something wrong with me.

Makes three of us. On another note I planted pinto beans for the first time. Gotta figure out how to know when to pick them.
