Lack of good judgement pre-dates selfies...... but, there does seem to be new vectors at play today......

Some people can't seem to participate in something, unless they can post the "perfect shot" online.

That ^ is mostly just a social factor for many people, but the other difference today is the commercial side...... many people escalate their behaviour, going for the shots that will build their Youtube following, and associated $$$$$.

More than a few have been killed, pursuing those Youtube $$$$$.

When I started this thread, I was thinking "I don't remember this happening with self-timers on 35mm SLRs". While I can't claim perfect memory :), I'm pretty sure this tech has affected people, and not always positively.....

When people are killed due to their own idiocy, one has to think that the planet may be a better place without them.

Agreed..

If you're gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough..

Not just selfies, look at the number of idiots you see walking down the street, along side a busy road, etc. staring into their cellphones or otherwise fiddling with it.

I don't have one so I'm not sure what's so fascinating they're all looking at.

Situational awareness is key... not much 'situation' in that smart phone that requires your total 'awareness', to the point of bodily harm. What ever happened to the concept of multi-tasking as was taught when learning to drive... constant scan cycles, road in front, mirrors x3, gauges, repeat every 5-10 seconds... same goes for walking down the street, or any other activities. Pay attention to all, process, evaluate, adjust activity.

I will admit, I've tripped over a few objects... but its likely due to wearing safety glasses... with bifocal 'cheater' magnification lens at the bottom in the last few years! Dad told me that would happen!

These guys are called ROOFERS. They illegally climb buildings and structures. Sometimes they get caught and get a $14.00 fine. Sometimes security beats them up. Sometimes they get killed. No one makes a big deal out of it.

ROOFERS, is that the Canadian politically correct way of saying retards?

Actually, I saw a picture of him standing on some tiny round platform, holding out his selfie stick, not holding on to anything, as there was nothing above the platform. Funny, how $14.00 is probably far less than admission for some high level sight seeing attraction.

After living and growing up in Canada, apparently little I say, is correct anymore.
