Christmas is just another day. If you need something, just go out & buy it. No need to be disappointed year after year with people unsatisfied with your gifts. Then you wake up one day to realize it's Christmas & not some crappy gift giving contest.

OMG! Jaded and cynical. My sentiments exactly!
There is another way to look at it. Pay attention throughout the year (or more) and figure out what turns one's crank. Then surprise them with a thoughtful gift. And no, it doesn't need to be on Xmas, because if you are like me, you would forget.

The gift of giving goes back to Saint Nicholas around 300AD. As I understand the story, he inherited some wealth and proceeded to help people anonymously. Tossing gold coins through a window to three young girls to build a dowry and keep them from prostitution. I guess one or some of the coins fell into a shoe or stocking.

Com'n guys, don't be jaded by the commercialism. You are in control (sort of).

^^^ This... I am spread out over several locations... it is my goal to one day be centralized... a place of everything and everything in place.

Same here. You are way more spread out than I am. Now my properties are within 1-1/2 hour drive but it is still an issue. One used to be 7 hours away but that one is gone, thankfully.

Oh no, I’m with you on that, Mark. Thoughtful actions when the occasion arises beat purchasing unwanted or (unneeded) items for the sake of an “occasion” any day.

I am a lucky one as my wife always knew what tool Santa needed to buy me, consequently I have a very well equipped shop.
Now days we wait 'til boxing day to do our Xmas shopping, LOL.

I get frustrated trying to make repairs out at the ranch... often I will bring me service truck if there is something to do.

My brother has workers and it is just not the same... tools walk or are misplaced or left broken with no one saying a word... he has 3 manual post hole diggers and each has a broken handle... and not a work... shovels too.

I said he needs to keep his tools separate and under lock and key... and some basic stuff for the guys...

Not a 3/8 ratchet to be found yesterday... and there should be at least 4!

I spent a fair amount of time at a Tool and Die shop... 35 employees, tool crib, etc... never had the problems looking for tools... if someone had what you needed from the crib the tool check was left in it's place... worked 99% of the time except when the boss's son was working on something!

Ultrarunner,
Try one of these Montezuma tool boxes. They're pricey but you can easily see the tools and what's missing. I have mine mounted on my flatbed truck. The best purchase I ever made. I bought the one in the link because I needed to carry SAE and metric. If you only need metric, one of the smaller ones would work fine.

Those boxes are like $600 plus the tools. I don’t trust people that much. I just drag the top part of my craftsman box into the back of my suburban. It’s too heavy to lift by myself but I can drag it across the nearly level gap and I have a cheap wood table that I can toss in the back if I need to unload it.

After several years my HF angle grinder bit the dust. I hinted at getting a new one for Christmas but no one caught the hint. I used my $9.99 coupon and got a new one yesterday, along with a free pack of bungee cords.

Pressure washer, it was too heavy for my wife to wrap so she was upset that I didn't have much to open Christmas morning, despite my reassurance that it was not a problem for me.

mapper - Lordy Lou - a pressure washer is a great present, wrapped or not. Your wife deserves a big hug and to be taken out of a nice dinner. Out here, where we were so remote, my wife really enjoyed going into the city and having to not fix another meal.
