A spruce had gotten big enough to block the winter sun from hitting the southern windows on my house so the tree had to go. There is nowhere near the house to get rid of the branches so I had to haul them away. It took four and a half trips.

That will make a nice home for a rabbit and/or other wildlife.

4 1/2 trips... Looks like it was a pretty healthy spruce. All you needed was some lights and tinsel to turn your tractor into a Christmas decoration.

It would also make a good start to a burn pile in late spring before the burn ban goes into effect.

Poplar tree on the left went down in recent wind. Having that much dang poplar on the ground is only half the problem. It killed two of our renter’s heifers when it went down.

I own a piece of property that I don't live close to... One time when I was there, I saw that my neighbor was letting his cows pasture on my land and had been for a long time, all without my permission!

When I went to the door and knocked, an old guy came to the door and when I asked what gave him the right to pasture his cattle on MY property! He got mad at me and told me a storm came through and lightening hit a tree with it coming down, killing his best cow! He demanded I pay him for his dead cow!!!

I told him, "where "I" come from, if someone pastures cattle without permission, we just shoot one of the cows for our freezer, to even things up"!!

I never saw his cattle over there again...

He should have asked permission but he probably did you a favor. It would have been a thicket of saplings otherwise.

It will have to be for other wildlife. Although I remember plenty of rabbits around here in the fifties, sixties and even into the seventies, I haven't seen any trace of one since then. I guess an epidemic wiped them out in this area. Too bad.

Yes, it was healthy growing out in the open. I guess it was 45 feet tall and there must have been over a hundred branches. I suppose you're right about decorating the tractor but it would make my neighbour jealous!

I rarely burn any branches - it seems like more work to me. Most of my wood cutting is done in my sugarbush and I usually don't have to drag branches very far to fill in a low spot. As long as they are not in the way of the regular sap gathering paths there is no problem to leave them to turn into compost. Out in the open in front of my house is another storey!
