They use to start them long before the white man came. A forrest that burns often burns quickly & clears out the undergrowth rather than killing off the trees too. Years of Smoky the Bear & stopping all fires has lead to hotter more destructive forrest fires.

I have read that also. It improved the habitat for game, as a true wilderness is a rather sterile environment from a large mammal standpoint.

Arguably "true wilderness" is what existed before Europeans came to the Americas. More frequent fires, some natural some started by native people looking to make the environment more to their liking, were part of that. Fires in wilderness areas are often let burn now to try to get back to that. In non wilderness areas they're more likely to be supressed for various reasons.

Con crews are a big part of the CalFire's manpower. It's a prized job for inmates. I saw con crews when I was on USFS fire crews in Arizona as well. The USFS con crews generally get the scut work like mopup. CalFire depends on cons so much that some get to be sawyers.

I also think the National Guard should be pressed in to service to help fight these fires instead of fighting in stupid wars in countries that hate us. It should not be our job to "save" the world.

Prison chain-gangs were once pressed in to service to help fight wildfires when they weren't building roads and cleaning roadside ditches. Just saying...more could be done.

Lots of prisoners on the lines and do a good job... but, an organization said slavery was abolished and wants the State to step up or get out...

Note... prisoners must volunteer, be screened and take training.

Here is a link but what I posted was from the late news broadcast last night.

Dragging chain found to be likely cause of numerous Covelo fires

Wow, so a dragging chain really did start the series of 15 lesser fires near Covelo, not to be confused with the nearby large Mendocino fire, or the Carr fire up north caused by a trailer wheel.

So it really is possible.

Added: I don't think people elsewhere can imagine how dry and critical California is right now, as illustrated by this 15-fire chain incident. This is just August while fire season normally peaks in October. We have a long way to go.

I wish they were more exacting in their descriptions. What are vehicle tow chains? Are they referring to safety chains used on bumper pull trailers? or perhaps a car trailer with a tow chain dragging behind off the back of car trailer?

An examination of the vehicle tow chains showed significant wear from “dragging” on the ground. A Cal Fire fire investigator was consulted and agreed the starts appeared to be consistent with a chain dragging behind a trailer and did not appear to be intentionally set. Authorities said the case was closed as accidental and it would be handled in a non-criminal manner.

I still don't believe it. Try grinding steel, quick put down the grinder and start a fire with one of the sparks! Maybe, red hot shackles coming off. Still a stretch if you ask me. Just MORE FAKE news!

I've had fires start from grinding, just depends on how good of a media you have to ignite and how many sparks you produce. Chain starting one is plausible, less likely around here but I can see in a very dry area.
Heck we I've seen mulch catch fire just from decomposition.

I've caught my riding mower smoldering in the barn just from the build-up of wet grass under the mower deck. Scared me.

I was impressing my daughter with how fast my grinder cut the bicycle lock, that she had lost the key for.

Until she giggled that I had set my pants on fire.
