Preventing Rodent Damage During Tractor Storage

In our area the best time to set out bait is in Fall. Rodents are like most animals and start searching for their indoor nests as winter approaches. I find that if I set out bait once in about late Sept or October, it will either be eaten or last all year long and not need to be refreshed until next Fall. I use the T tube PVC bait station design shown in previous post. Keeps non target animals away from bait. We have 3 cats and 2 dogs and have not had problem with them eating poisoned mice. The rodents usually die in the walls or attic or under some furniture and stink up the place for a few days.

My mom's dog did get a small piece of the solid bar type bait they sell which you have to break into pieces. It was not in a bait station but up against a wall behind furniture in a shed and when we were moving it got exposed and his nose found it. I caught him chewing on it in the yard. Took him to vet for vitamin K injection and activated charcoal tablets and he had vitamin pills to take for 3 weeks but no ill effects. Also, when we called the vet, he told her to give the dog hydrogen peroxide in some food to make him vomit. She put it in a can of tuna and he ate it and shortly after threw up, so maybe that helped. Anyway, my point is, you have to be careful with the bait and pay attention and just use it when necessary.

I don't have time to mess around with live traps and such. I don't like to use poison but I justify it like this: the rodents are free to live anywhere on my property and eat whatever they want OUTSIDE of my buildings. They have acres of habitat to roam and live their lives. When they come in and start chewing on wires and plumbing they have broken our deal and they will pay the price. Same for brown recluse spiders, black widows and poisonous snakes heheheh.....

I also invested in the ultrasonic pest repelling devices and if I know the truck will be parked a while, I put one of the devices on the end of an extension cord and put it right under the hood. I also put the devices in about every outlet in the barn. I know that consumer groups don稚 give them much respect but in my main barn, I see hardly any rodents and these ultrasonic doohickeys must play some part in that.

Curious which brand you used? I tried the Victor brand from Lowes (Shop Victor Heavy-Duty Sonic PestChaser Rodent Repellent at Lowes.com), and it doesn't work. I set up a game cam in a detached garage because I suspected a groundhog or something was getting in there and wanted to see what it was. What I also saw were field mice crawling all over the garden tractor, ~5' from the device. Wondering if a different style works better?

I think they probably work about as good as the deer wistles they sell to go on the front of your car.

I have never heard of anyone using Carbon Dioxide to deliberately kill any sort of animal.
Carbon Monoxide.......Yup!!
Not to be an a hole but just because you have not heard of something does not mean it doesn't exist.

The problem I have had w/ bait is that they would get into it and drag it to other buildings, stashed in pallets outside or whatever. I was using Ramik green which worked well, but I have pets and chickens running all over heck.

I had a problem keeping rodents out of bags of protein pellets. I took a 300 gal. tote, laid it on it's side, and then cut the "top" out. Then screwed the plastic back on to the metal, then put hinges on the metal to form a lid.

I would off load the bag into the tote and then used a Victor eradicator which I bought at Home Depot and powered it up and let it hang in the bag. In three years I never found a mouse in there. So, one Spring I left an empty bag in the container, and no eradicator. After checking in a couple of weeks there were 5 mice in it. My conclusion is the mice could get in, but didn't if the eradicator was on.

Used to kill specimen insects too. Something about, they don't flap around and damage themselves before expiring.

So the mice would chew thru the plastic of your tote without the eradicator?

I do not understand the relationship between "euthanasia of laboratory rodents", and "Preventing Rodent Damage During Tractor Storage".
