12pt sockets used to be handy when all we had was course tooth ratchets. Not much needed with fine tooth ratchets. These days though I use SK impact sockets and Makita 1/2" impact wrench instead.

I don’t understand why 12 point are so common. I’ve never even seen a bolt that wasn’t 6 point except some 4 side stuff. I’ve heard 12 point bolts exist but I’ve heard the same for big foot.

Buddy of mine came across some 12 pt bolts on an old bobcat skid steer. He had a brain fart and sent me a text with a picture asking about them.

I just sent him a text back saying to dig through his box for a 12pt instead of his usual 6pt sockets that he used.

We maintained 24, 150 to 550 ton York R-11 machines. Most all bolts were 12 point. Kindah like working on a Chinooks or Hueys, they were 12 point as well.
But automotive use yeah much like big foot.

Been going to HD for 6 point sockets one set at a time. At least they have a better selection like gear wrench. Other quality tool can be ordered from them for a decent price.

Auto use 12 pt. ='s big foot indeed....:laughing:

One thing so really like about gear wrench. Just about everyone carries them The big 3 tool trucks, as well as most hardware stores in town, Makes it nice if you have something not up to snuff.

I couldn't count the number of times I have seen shade tree mechanics putting long pipe extensions on breaker bars or using regular sockets with impact wrenches. Or using taps and dies without applying the proper cutting oil. Then complain when they break.

Unconditional is unconditional.. a deal is a deal. A friend of mine went to all fish U can eat place. He & girlfriend.
Ordered fish once, twice & 3 times. The 4th time, manager refused to give more. Friend said, "It says all U can eat". Manager says .........
"That deal only applies to people, not animals." That was in 80s. Today the internet would boycott manager restaurant town etc.
Even then there were jerks. But today, "A DEAL IS A DEAL." is gone. Handshake doesn't mean anything either.

Perhaps that is why a gentleman's hand shack appears to have been replaced by the more aggressive "fist bump", which I always refuse to reciprocate.

Long story but I need to buy new wrenches. Any advice on brand and/or style? I've got a decent socket set but no wrenches at all!
