Gardens/plots for 2018

Seeds that I started in the house are up and under grow lights, doing well, maybe too well. I may have jumped the gun on seed starting because the weather is not cooperating. About an inch of snow on the ground this morning, and more on the way. Highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s for the next week.
I was hoping to transplant the cabbage and brussels sprouts into the garden by the 15th, also thought I could plant peas by now. Not happening. I think I am going to start another batch of seeds this weekend as a backup because my first starts may wind up too "leggy" and weak. I have lots of seeds, plenty of seed starter, and containers so I'll keep trying. I'm kinda new at starting plants in the house, but been gardening for years. Not that I am any good at it, but I've been doing it for years. (kinda like golf)

Unusually cold here too. 18 deg F this morning...wind chill 5 deg F. Everyday is cloudy and misty or foggy, or raining or windy (35 mph yesterday) and all the above. Did get the potatoes, onions and Sugar Snap peas in the ground a couple weeks ago.

Cheers.....anyway to all,
Mike

Tilled up a little garden spot today for tomatoes, okra, beets and squash. I wont be planting anything in the ground till around 1st of May. Supposed to be 32F in the morning. Man what a spring. Fruit trees all bloomed out in late Feb, early March and then the cold rain and wind knocked off most of the blooms. Last year was a bumper crop for the fruit and we gave plums to everyone and made tons of jelly and plum wine, but this year we will be lucky to get enough to have some fresh fruit to eat for ourselves. NO wine or jelly this year I am sure.

Gary!!--Know the feeling,--I think the weather this year might be a real problem.--late/cold/wet, and as you say, the freezes not only knock the blossoms off but I think it also hurts the trees as well.--Our trees here are still holding back, and hope they continue to do so. Mostly weeds coming up so far and I need to spray some of them but the temps. need to be above 45* to do much killing so this 20* stuff is not going to do it.

We might have to visit Andy and his indoor garden!--That is one neat setup!! thanks; sonny580

A cold north wind today. ... going down into the teens tonight....maybe even some snow.

Cheers,
Mike

Got more snow, less than an inch, BUT that means its still winter!--Ground has been frozen several times since the onion plants were planted!----Might get interesting this year! LOL!!!
Been trying to get a couple tillers back together and weather sucks!--cold on fingers and can't handle bolts and screws so will have to work on making some lumber til it warms up a bit.--also have a lot of brush to pick up and toss into the big chipper! thanks; sonny580

Planted brussels sprouts, radish, peas, and onion sets yesterday. Temp in the 60's, but heavy rain, snow, and possibly an ice storm on the way. The third coldest April on record so far. Next week looks really crappy, cold, windy and wet. If anything comes up it will be a bonus,if not I guess I will have taken it in the "ice" Indoor starts are looking good. If it ever warms up I'll transplant the sprouts, cabbage, and romaine lettuce. Too early for the peppers and tomatoes.

We still have bout the same here, cold/wet/WIND/ etc!--Did get the spuds planted yesterday and another row of peas.---The rows in this middle garden are 190 feet long, and we have a bit over 6 rows of spuds, so will see what they do.--WAY too cold for plants here too!
First seeds planted are not up either, ground too cold, so we may have to replant a few things!
Today it's trying to rain/storm, and temps dropping like a rock!---starting to think spring passed us by this year again, like it did last year! thanks; sonny580

Current temp, 26 degrees,30 mph wind, rain, snow, ice. The only thing I am going to plant today,is my carcass in a recliner. And to think I was looking forward to April. Not likin' it!

Yesterday I dug a couple of horseradish plants up and processed them. They made 2 and 1/2 pints of finished horseradish.--Nice and strong!
I then cut the crowns into 4 pieces and re-planted them, extending the row another 7 plants longer.
This kind that I have is a very old kind, and my start came from an old farmstead many years ago that my boss at the time had me bulldoze out.--When I came to the horseradish patch, I picked up all I could in a hurry and tossed it into the truck and took it home and planted it.--I still maintain this kind because it does well for us here and really prolific!
Anybody else go for hot horseradish??? LOL!!!!
Looks like some of our radishes are coming up, nothing else yet.--Ground was white this morning here and temp. was 25* with 30 mph winds!--- GREAT spring???? how you guys doing?? thanks; sonny580

Neighbor has an established horseradish patch, and he dug up one plant and brought it over for me to grind. I cut it into chunks, then hit it with the slap chopper, throw it in the blender with some white vinegar, and let fly. Open the lid and spoon it into jars. This stuff will really make you cry, nothing like fresh ground, never could find any store bought that could compare. The oldtime farmers said you can dig it in any month that has an R in it. I saved the crowns to plant if the snow ever melts.(yes, we still have snow on the ground) Supposed to warm up the middle of next week. This is now officially the coldest April on record here. Good luck with your gardens!

Weather here can't make it's mind up, two or three warm spring like days, then two or three cold winter like days. Most of the time when it's warmer, it's raining. I've had the tiller hooked to the tractor for three weeks now and just waiting for the garden to dry out enough to start getting it ready.
The plants I started from seed are going to be huge by the time temps and soil are ready. Going to have to up pot them to 5 inch pots before long.
