Stump Grinder Woodland Mills WG24?

Clutch needs to be set super light on mine or it'll twist a class 7 tube set (I've done it). The class 4 actually went 120 degrees when it failed.

Say what you want about the price of green paint - Nebraska tested my PTO at 59HP, and it's got gobs of torque.

I only cut 6 stumps when I destroyed the class 4 shaft, and a couple of those were dinkers.

I received my WG24 last week and am thrilled with it thus far. Simple and robust design and it works great. I run it on my M7060 in e-pto as I have far more power than required. My tractor also has creep speed which works great for this grinder. Not sure what size my PTO shaft is but it sure looks and feels very heavy duty. Cutting the shaft length correctly is a big deal with these but this is very easy to do. The grinder works far better than I expected and even large stumps are turned to mulch in minutes. I would recommend this type grinder of the hydraulic swing type.

Why?

The only time I have to move the tractor is to change distance from the stump. You have to move the tractor the whole time you're cutting.

It is more simple in function, more compact and costs almost half as much.

And you have to control it with your feet while it's behind your back, and only cuts on one side so 50% of your movement is not making chips.

I have $1800 into mine including the 24 Greenteeth and a 2 spool valve with QDs.

Both types have their pros and cons. For me, I don't need to use my feet, I just flip the shuttle lever with my fingers, this also allows me to sit sideways in my seat so I don't have to crain my neck so much. I can also use the WG24 on my other tractors that don't have hydraulics, so FOR ME the WG24 was a much better choice. I doubt you can find a new hyd swing grinder for $1800 either. The WG24 may only cut in one direction but it can take up to 6" at a time and has 36 teeth. It would be neat to see both units run side my side on similar stumps by skilled operators but I figure the chances of that are slim!

I wonder if you guys could attach this to a mid mount connection (put it out front). I guess only scuts have midmounts (?) so this probably doesn't work for many. Its how my tractor uses the stump grinder, altough mine is way different from the rest.

I found it in my driveway - that's where final assembly occurred. I built it myself.

No, I already had the tools and skills, and earned a living with them long enough to have bought everything used in the project besides steel and parts.

It cost me $1800. Maybe you need more lucrative hobbies? I make stuff.

Has anyone used one of the woodland mills type with a gear transmission tractor? I am considering one for my Ford 3910 which has pretty low gears with the 8 speed but not low like a hydrostatic would be

Your lowest gear will be way to fast, you would be riding the clutch constantly, not to mention the clutching and gear shifting and raising lowering the grinder. No way would I recommend this grinder for that tractor. My tractor is geared but I have a creep range that the first gear is 1/10 the speed of low range first gear, which combined with the shuttle shift make running the grinder a breeze.

TIG welding is one of the most relaxing things I know how to do. Crank up the shop tunes, fire up the machines, make some chips and sparks, and wind up with useful tools in the end. It makes me happy. I don't do it to save money, but when you look at the cost of these low production specialty implements, it does save money vs buying them.

I agree with you. I do the same thing myself but I mostly factor in the time when I build something because I make my living fixing things for people. If it's cheaper to buy vs build I'll buy because otherwise I could use that time to be earning money. But.... I don't always follow that rule because I enjoy building stuff too.

What I really enjoy is picking away at all the little things that don't work so right now I have two 2001 TDI's that I'm fixing up. Will I make money at it? Doubtful but I'm having fun doing something I like so I understand your position completely.

I came to the same conclusion after reading and watching some more. Picked up a 22" disk of 1 1/4 steel this morning to use with an old brushog gearbox I have and make a swinging type instead, be much more useful I think

Get a class 7 PTO shaft. I have to have my 4 disk clutch set as light as it will go or I'll twist a class 7. I think the 2 disk clutch would've been a better choice too.
