Oil Leaking Out Of The Split Pin Plug

Just a little update:

The Vent was not plugged. After running it a bit since the post I've paid more attention to what's happening. When the motor is running it barely leaks any of the oil at all but when I shut her down all the fluid that's blown past the seal comes out at once. I'm assuming that whatever is spinning around in there keeps the oil strung out on the outside walls and when it stops spinning gravity pushes it down to the plug.

I don't mind continuing to run it like this if all I have to do is add hyd fluid from time to time but I worry about the oil messing something up in the clutch housing if oil isn't supposed to be in there.

If oil gets on your clutch disc that will be evident as the clutch will begin to fail.

Coming back to update this.

Still having the same problem. Seems like running the PTO is what's causing most of it to leak out. I can run the tractor without the PTO for quite a bit and not have to add hardly any fluid. But then after running the brush hog for a few hours I will have to add a gallon or two of hyd fluid.

So now I'm debating if I should pay to get it fixed or just trade it in and get a bigger tractor... Cause who doesn't want a bigger tractor:)

I would not put off making a decision. A gallon or two loss over a few hours isn't good. Things could get worse and leave you without a tractor just when you need it most.

If you have well water, you should also be very concerned about polluting your ground water.

Sounds like it is time to take action. Fix or trade-in.

I 2nd that. A cup or 2 in a day isn't good. Gallons in a few hours is bad & will soon be catastrophic. At a minimum a seal is toast, possibly a bearing leading to a destroyed seal.

When mine failed it was under heavy PTO work but that had nothing to do with the failure. When the oil got really hot it turned into a small stream. The next day using it for some general work I only got an infrequent drip but put it under heavy load again and it streamed. Went to my dealer who told me he's not going to lie to me and say it never happens. He took me out in the shop where a lower horsepower version of mine was sitting split having its seal changed. I asked him to make me a deal I couldn't refuse and he could have the old one - and he did. Actually the mechanic who did these changes was booked up for a few weeks and I needed the tractor.

Yeah that seems to be exactly the case with mine.
