What saves a woods tractor much of the time is a winch. You living in Vermont (was in Ludlow just last week. Their property taxes are nuts!) I wouldn't think our woods are much different. I've logged my property for 40 years and you cannot tell where I've been. I dunno, I guess it's my dumb arse way of payback for all the damage the logging outfit I worked for caused where you could see where we'd been 15 years later. I'm the sensitive type.

I've always said nothing beats up machinery better than the woods.
These things are freakin cute: Awassos MD Mini skidder

it appears that they don't make the mini anymore, but are offering one which they say compares to a JD440.
They also have a couple other neat machines, including a little 35 HP machine on tracks that would be great for low impact forestry in wet areas. (Also for moose hunting. )

That looks to be a gorgeous birch. They don't get that big here if that is what it is.
That looks like poplar. Nice and fast growing for pulpwood, but it doesn't make very good firewood.

That's what it is, poplar or aspen. Locally we call it popple. Mostly used for pulp , as said, or pallets. I burn some in the spring and fall. Good if you want a fast hot fire just to warm things up a little. I made a small 1/2 acre clear cut down below on that side hill hoping to get early successional regen from root sprouting to make some song bird breeding habitat. I winched it all up and around that corner to the tractor on the tractor road.

Yes GG, I should have qualified my statement. In springtime it is great firewood; or you could waste your rock maple, then sleep with your windows open as I did last night.

It does make pretty good lumber though...

If you build with it, you just have to use it in a way it will stay dry...

I have heard that. It seems like it would be good for camp cabinets. There's a company downstate which makes the pointed apple tree ladders from bigtooth . He says that there's a lot less defect than quaking aspen, which is most common up here. I guess that when somebody is in the top of a 19foot ladder, they don't want it to have defects!

It takes paint well, so you see a lot of window casing, trim and other things made from Poplar...

It’s cheap, takes paint well, and isn’t a very desirable lumber. What more could you want for paint wood?

We sell a lot of KD poplar at my work. Cabinet makers love it for painted kitchens , great for interior doors and just hard enough to be really good for interior trim of all kinds .
