We are responsible for remounting the box and restringing the cable to the cabin so that will have to be done when the power company can shut off the power. Still lots of work to do yet but no buildings got crushed, no people harmed, someone was looking out. My mother was home when this happened.

Looks like you and your mom got lucky with that one, thankfully. Last major storm (Irene I think) a big hickory fell on my mother-in-law's carport and the whole lot came down onto her car and had the poor thing resting on the rubber suspension stops. That was quite a project to clean up. Sick feeling driving up to her house and seeing that. I still have some BBQ wood from that tree, all these years later.

Put a new prince valve on the splitter. Then, split a truck load of osage orange. Have a bunch more ready to go.

Super nice cage you made for your tractor OP. Just what one should have for woods work. How do you keep your tie rods from getting bent on your Kubota?

What style tie rods does it have? My L3800 has the tie rods stupidly placed in front of the axel. My L3240 had a completely different and much better setup. It’s neatly tucked behind the axel. You’ve probably torn something else off long before you could damage it.

BFJ.
Glad your mom okay...whew.
Amazing how much damage ice storm can do in short time, and after effects seem to last long time.

This question sounds like you seen this problem before, I think it was one of the first thing I bent after couple years I owed the tractor. I didn't see it coming, drove over a cut up block, somehow the block went vertical and hit the tie-rod, next thing I knew I could steer the tractor, took couple minutes to find out why, just makes me wonder WHY do tractor companies only design tractors for the hay field, they should consider the wood field, I bet a lot of people get wood out with tractors.

To fix it I had to bring my torches out to the firewood landing because I could get the tie rod off, I heat it up, straighten it out, drove it in the shop and welded a small flat bar a long side the rod, blanking out kuuboota at the same time, hasn't bent, broke, bothered again.

Not long after that I bent the 3 point lift rod. Another thing I did see coming but do now. I let the winch down to hook up firewood, one side of the winch was on a stump that i didn't notice, I winch up the wood, the other side of the winch went down to the ground, bending the rod. From that day forward I always make sure that both sides of winch blade is on ground before winching.

Yes stupidly in front. Strange that your L3240 tie rods are behind, kabota must've figure out, hey we shouldn't put them tie rods behind the axle, no one will break them that way, lets discontinue that model and come with another one with more cup holders, all the board of directors who don't know what firewood is said that's a great idea.

Just in case there's topic police here, last weeks picture, 20°, no wind, bright sunshine added up to a great time.

Unlike today. Well, the temp's are about the same. I see that you have stops mounted to the top of your bucket to keep the logs from rolling up the sides, over the top, and slamming down onto your hood. (And don't ask me how I figured that out so quickly. ;) ) I've been noticing the way that you and another Maine member RustyIron have your tractors set up for logging. Nice job, I may borrow some of your ideas.

That's some hard earned experience OldP. It's good you know how to apply some heat and weld on a couple splints to keep going.

I had a new winch experience right after that last ice storm. My control rope was kind of stiff - think frozen rope. I gave it a couple pulls with the pto off and figured I was good to go. I winched in the first hitch and it stopped where I wanted it to at the back of the tractor. What I didn't realize was that the stiff rope did not fully retract around those little control pulleys so the clutch was still partially engaged but slipping. When I bent over and unhooked the chokers so the chains were free the cable started winching in. When the sliders and hook hit the top pulley they whipped upwards making the chains whip upwards. They caught me on the side of the head. Knocked off my hard hat, bent up my glasses, and I had a sore jaw. Lucky that was all. First time anything like that ever happened.
