What makes ironwood called ironwood? Is it hard or is it rot/insect resistant? Or both?

I thought most folks referred to Hornbeam as ironwood (actually separate species)...never heard black locust called that...

Both Hornbeam aka blue beech (Carpinus Caroliana) and Hophornbeam (Ostrya Virgiana) are referred to as Ironwood in my area. They are both smaller trees from the birch family, their barks are very different but are still closely related.

Olneya ironwood is very hard and heavy. Its density is greater than water and thus sinks; it does not float downstream in washes, and must be moved by current motion. One popular usage for the wood is for knife handles, since its hardness, grain, and coloring is ideal.

IT is a white pine, maybe I'll mill it tomorrow?? I don't mind stained WP lumber either...

I had a couple of WP logs sawn last fall from trees which I cut in 2015. The outside boards are discolored and have wormholes, but they are solid and will make great sheathing when I build my garage this summer.

I had a couple of WP logs sawn last fall from trees which I cut in 2015. The outside boards are discolored and have wormholes, but they are solid and will make great sheathing when I build my garage this summer.

I milled that pine, there wasn't any blue stain, no bug holes either...

I got some nice lumber out of it.
