Not sure what you mean? There is a standard

I was mis-interpreting the word "should".

I was reading it as.you thought there was no standard and that there "should" be one

Don't forget curl force is greater than lift. So you could apply more stress to the forks by curling than lifting.

Lift force is a lot greater at ground level and most manufacturers don’t give that measurement. And no lift spec takes into account for shock load.

Thanks for that. I was under the impression curl was always stronger.

My loader can lift around 1500# so I got a 4000# set of 48# forks. They work great for everything but I did tweak one fork by about 1/2-1" at the tip by trying to pop out a rock and really torquing it. The 4000# rating must mean for an even load centered on forks with no shocking the load. I just need tpo watch it a little when going under something with close tolerances.

Ted from Everything Attachments says he hates floating forks, I think because you can’t point them down? I’ve used my non-floating forks in ways you shouldn’t like digging out a rock so I don’t think I’d like floating either.

Get good ones, you never know what you may want to move!

Another good point right there....

If you ever add a clamp to go with your forks.......That clamp is adding weight felt by the forks (though not felt by the rest of the tractor.

Some info on the specification. You are probably okay with a pair of forks at 2x your lift capacity. They should not yield until 3x their rating. As previous posts indicate, that doesn't mean you can't bend them.

The first ISO2330 test is a yield test. For forklift forks built to a load capacity of less than 5500 kilograms (12,100 pounds), the test load is 3 times the load capacity. For forklifts forks built to a load capacity of greater than 5500 kilograms (12,100 pounds), the test load is anywhere between 2.5 and 3 times the load capacity of the fork."

I prefer floating forks. If you need to point them down or apply down pressure, use a short piece of chain.

The 48 inch floating block forks:

The 42 inch heavy duty floating forks with one chained to show the difference:

Floating forks would never do for me...

SR

Me neither. They have an obvious disadvantage and I’m not sure what the advantage is.

While we are on the subject, what are the thoughts about forks that clamp onto the bucket?

They suck. They cost a considerable amount of lift capacity and visibility is awful. They’ve been known to bend buckets.

Yup! They are cheap, but that's about it.
